Osaka’s New Riverside Food Village

Just across the river from Umeda, Osaka has a new place to eat, drink and spend an evening outdoors. Minamo Juso opened August 8 on the banks of the Yodogawa, bringing together 22 permanent yatai-style restaurants, riverside seating, BBQ, cruises and weekend activities in a new gathering place just five minutes from Hankyu Juso Station. Following its opening week and an Obon break, the riverside village begins its first full month of regular operations on August 17.

The food is reason enough to make the short trip from central Osaka. These aren’t temporary festival stalls: the compact yatai function more like miniature restaurants, with equipped kitchens that allow vendors to prepare everything from sushi and rice dishes to grilled meats and international cuisine. The opening lineup spans Japanese favorites including yakitori, oden, ramen, gyoza, yakiniku and robatayaki alongside Thai, Korean, Italian and Mexican-inspired cooking.

Among the names worth seeking out is Phed Phed, serving Thai cuisine; Sushi Joe, bringing proper sushi to the riverside; and Saeki, specializing in octopus shabu-shabu and charcoal grilling. Yajima pairs robatayaki with Japanese sake, while Hanjan adds Korean flavors and Lion Tacos brings tacos into the mix. Cafés, sweets and daytime options round out a lineup designed for grazing between stalls rather than committing to a single restaurant.

The setting may be Minamo Juso’s biggest draw. Tables and stalls stretch along the open Yodogawa riverbank, with greenery and broad river views during the day and the illuminated towers of Umeda rising across the water after dark. It feels surprisingly removed from central Osaka considering Hankyu trains make the trip from Osaka-Umeda to Juso in around three minutes.

Food is only one part of the larger riverside project. The neighboring WONDER BBQ FIELD Juso offers outdoor BBQ overlooking the river, while sightseeing cruises and other water activities are planned around the Juso waterfront. Weekend and holiday events are also part of the long-term program, turning the area into somewhere to spend an afternoon or evening rather than simply stopping by for dinner.

Minamo Juso also joins TUGBOAT TAISHO in giving Osaka another distinctive riverside dining destination close to downtown. The new village marked its August 8 launch with Minamo Lantern, sending illuminated sky lanterns into the evening with the Umeda skyline as a backdrop—a fitting introduction for a development designed to bring people back to the riverbank for food, recreation and community events.

That community element is central to the idea behind Minamo Juso. Osaka City and the operators envision the riverbank as a place for local events, recreation and environmental activities as well as dining, reconnecting Juso with a stretch of the Yodogawa that has traditionally been more open space than destination.

For its opening month, though, the attraction is wonderfully simple: pick a stall, order something you’ve never tried, grab a seat beside the river and watch the lights of Umeda come on across the water. With 22 kitchens to explore and plans for as many as 29, Minamo Juso gives Osaka another compelling reason to take dinner outside—and to cross the Yodogawa to do it.
