OSAKA SCENE celebrates its first anniversary

One year ago, OSAKA SCENE went live.
Born from a simple idea: Osaka deserved a better way to discover what was happening here. Not just the biggest festivals or the attractions everyone already knows. The small neighborhood matsuri. The exhibition that closes next weekend. The flea market held on temple grounds. The concert you didn’t realize was coming. The centuries-old tradition taking place a few train stops away. And especially the things you might never find if you don’t already know what to search for.
That became OSAKA SCENE.
But the idea had started taking shape long before the site went live.
It Started With a Quest -
What Can I Do in Osaka Today?
Long before OSAKA SCENE had a name, a website or its first story, it began with a question almost anyone in Osaka has asked:
What can I do TODAY in Osaka?
We love Osaka. And one of the great things about being here is knowing that somewhere across the city, something interesting is almost always happening. Finding it was another matter.
The information was out there, but scattered across event websites, venue calendars, social media accounts, ticketing services and countless other sources. Finding what was happening on a particular day or weekend could mean searching source after source and piecing everything together yourself. And somewhere along that quest came another question:
Why isn’t all of this in one place?
That became the starting point for OSAKA SCENE. We wanted a place where someone could discover the breadth of what was happening across Osaka, understand why something might be worth experiencing, and have the practical information needed to actually go.
OSAKA SCENE began English-first, with Osaka’s international community and visitors very much in mind. But as the publication grew, we discovered something important: the desire for a better way to find what is happening in Osaka crosses languages. Our readers increasingly include people who live here, Japanese travelers exploring Osaka from elsewhere in the country and international visitors discovering the city for the first time. Different audiences, but often the same question: What can I do Today in Osaka? That realization expanded the mission. OSAKA SCENE is about making Osaka easier to discover — wherever you come from and whatever language you speak.
Turning that idea into the OSAKA SCENE you see today took time. Concepts became presentations and mock-ups, followed by iteration after iteration as we worked through how to bring more of Osaka’s event information together without making it overwhelming. The design and editorial format evolved together, bringing us closer to the platform we had imagined: one place where discovering Osaka could be as enjoyable as exploring it.
The first OSAKA SCENE story was drafted on February 15, 2025, while that work was still underway. Then, on September 13, 2025, OSAKA SCENE went live. One year later, that original quest has helped build a library of more than 400 event pages and 50 feature stories.
Those numbers are worth celebrating. But what we discovered along the way may be even more important.
The Calendar Became a Doorway Into Osaka
A festival leads into history. An exhibition opens a window into art and culture. A sporting event introduces a team, a stadium and a neighborhood. A seasonal tradition explains why a particular weekend, shrine or plate of food matters. What began primarily as an events guide gradually became something broader: a way of exploring Osaka through what the city does—and when it does it.
The story is in Kishiwada’s danjiri racing through narrow streets and moon viewing beneath an autumn sky. It is a baseball game or a concert under the roof of Kyocera Dome, fireworks over the water and food stalls appearing for a festival weekend.
But it is also in the smaller discoveries: realizing that something you have walked past dozens of times has a history you never knew, or finding a neighborhood tradition that has continued for generations just a few train stops away.
The deeper we looked, the bigger Osaka became. This is a city where centuries-old traditions survive because local communities continue to show up and carry them forward. Here, the new lives alongside the old.
After a year of looking, one lesson has become very clear: You have to know it’s happening. Then you have to go.
There is always the next event. There’s always another story.
Now for Year Two
One year in, OSAKA SCENE is still only getting started.
In year two, we want to make OSAKA SCENE easier for more people to use. Built-in Japanese is next, eliminating the need to rely on browser translation, with additional languages to follow as we grow. The goal is simple: open the Osaka we’ve been discovering to more people.
And eventually, we want to take OSAKA SCENE off the screen. Our Scene Guides — stories built around experiences like Osaka’s beer festivals, Golden Week and other parts of the city’s calendar — have given us a glimpse of what OSAKA SCENE MAGAZINE could become in print: something you might pick up at a hotel, restaurant or favorite spot around Osaka and use to discover what to do next.
There are bigger ideas beyond that. We’ll save some of those for another anniversary. For now, the mission remains wonderfully simple:
Find Osaka. Share Osaka. Go experience it.

So many ideas have taken shape there, and we couldn’t imagine a more fitting place for a publication devoted to discovering Osaka.
