Last Chance to Walk Through Old Osaka

Walk out of an elevator in modern Osaka and into a city street from centuries ago. Shops line the road, traditional machiya houses open onto the street and the light overhead shifts as day turns to night. It isn’t a movie set or outdoor historical village — a full-scale recreation of an Edo-period Osaka neighborhood sits high above Tenjinbashisuji inside the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living.

Visitors have only a few more days to see it before a temporary four-month closure for major renovations. Osaka Museum of Housing and Living will close beginning September 1, 2026, for work that includes replacement of its escalators and elevators along with other facility improvements. The museum is scheduled to reopen in early January 2027.

The centerpiece is the museum’s permanent exhibition, where visitors can walk through a full-scale recreation of an Osaka neighborhood during the Tenpō era of the 1830s rather than simply viewing the city through models and display cases. Houses and shops can be entered and explored, while changing light and sound help transform the indoor streetscape throughout the visit. Other exhibits trace how Osaka homes and everyday life evolved through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa and Heisei eras.

Summer adds another layer to the reconstructed neighborhood. Through August 31, the permanent exhibition features summer festival decorations, bringing the atmosphere of Osaka’s traditional festival season into the streets and houses of the recreated city.

Upstairs, the museum’s final special exhibition before closing is Creation Begins with Copying — Funpon of Osaka Painter Goi Kinsui. From a collection of approximately 3,000 study drawings left by Shijo-school painter Goi Kinsui, the museum is displaying 150 selected works publicly for the first time. The drawings reveal how artists learned through copying, sketching and preserving models before developing work of their own. The exhibition also ends August 31.

August is also the final opportunity to experience Osaka Hyakusei at the museum. The XR attraction opened in July 2025 and takes visitors on a 400-year journey through Osaka history centered on Sakaisuji and Hiranomachi-dori. More than 7,000 people have participated, but the service will permanently end at this location when the museum closes at the end of August.

Opened in 2001, Osaka Museum of Housing and Living is one of the city’s most unusual museums because it makes Osaka itself the exhibit. Rather than concentrating on famous artworks or historic treasures, it explores how ordinary people lived, worked and built communities as the city changed around them.

That makes the coming closure more than the end of a temporary exhibition. August 31 is the last chance to experience the museum in its current form — from walking the streets of old Osaka to seeing its summer festival decorations and taking one final virtual journey through 400 years of the city.

When the doors reopen in early 2027, we’ll have another story to tell.
