Nakanoshima Art Lights Builds to a Three-Night Festival

Glowing Balloons, Food, Music and Waterfront Magic

An outdoor light-art exhibition builds toward a riverside finale of glowing hot-air balloons, live jazz and soul, food, wine and contemporary installations.

For ten autumn nights, Nakanoshima Park becomes an outdoor gallery of contemporary light art. But the real celebration comes at the end. From October 23–25, 2026, illuminated hot-air balloons, live jazz, soul and R&B, and a pop-up wine bar bring festival energy to Osaka’s waterfront. Called Night Glow & Music, the three-night finale transforms NAKANOSHIMA ART LIGHTS 2026 from an evening art exhibition into a gathering of music, food and glowing installations beneath the city skyline. Admission is free.

The experience begins October 16, when four light installations illuminate the park’s rose gardens, bridge and surrounding landscape. Open nightly from 18:00 to 22:00, the exhibition invites visitors to follow a trail of contemporary artworks through one of Osaka’s most atmospheric riverside spaces. Some works respond to human interaction; others use movement, projection and carefully controlled light to transform familiar surroundings.

K.L.V FIELD creates shifting waves of suspended light in the western Rose Garden, while Bloom with You invites visitors to interact with an illuminated bouquet in the eastern garden. Nearby, Water Bridge washes Barazono Bridge in rippling projections, and the new Prism in the Air uses light and mist to create rainbow-like effects beneath the Hanshin Expressway.

Then, on October 23, the atmosphere changes. For three evenings, the park’s lawn hosts Night Glow & Music, with illuminated hot-air balloons providing a dramatic backdrop for live performances. Three musical sets each night bring together performers from the Kansai jazz, soul and R&B scenes, while Toyonaka’s Le Plus opens a temporary bar serving natural wines, food and desserts. Visitors can watch the balloons being prepared and illuminated, although the display depends on suitable weather.

Takahiro Matsuo

The creative force behind the exhibition is Japanese light artist Takahiro Matsuo, founder of the artist collective LUCENT. His work has appeared in galleries and public spaces across Japan and internationally, but Osaka audiences may recognize his most recent achievement: K.L.V (Kinetic Light Vision), created for Shiga Prefecture’s exhibition inside the Kansai Pavilion at Expo 2025. Featuring 450 illuminated spheres moving through space, the installation won a Gold Prize at the Japan Space Design Awards 2025.

The result is an event with two distinct pleasures: a quieter evening exploring light art along the waterfront, or a lively closing weekend combining art, music and food. Either way, NAKANOSHIMA ART LIGHTS offers a fresh perspective on Osaka after dark—and a finale worth planning an evening around.

THE EXPERIENCE

NAKANOSHIMA ART LIGHTS 2026 offers two ways to enjoy Osaka’s waterfront after dark: a ten-night exhibition of contemporary light art and a lively three-night finale combining music, food, wine and illuminated hot-air balloons. Visitors can explore the installations at their own pace, then return for the expanded Night Glow & Music program from October 23–25, 2026.

  • Follow the Light-Art Trail: Four installations are spread across Nakanoshima Park’s Rose Garden, Barazono Bridge and surrounding areas, creating an illuminated walking route through the waterfront landscape.
  • Discover Kinetic Light Art: K.L.V FIELD brings Takahiro Matsuo’s artistic exploration of light and movement outdoors, building on the creative approach behind LUCENT’s award-winning Expo 2025 installation.
  • Interact with Illuminated Roses: At Bloom with You, visitors can engage with an illuminated bouquet and experience how light transforms the eastern Rose Garden.
  • Experience the Waterfront After Dark: Water Bridge uses projections to animate Barazono Bridge, while Prism in the Air combines light and mist near the Hanshin Expressway overpass.
  • Enjoy Three Nights of Live Music: During the October 23–25 finale, nine scheduled performances bring jazz, soul, R&B and other musical styles to the park’s lawn, with three approximately 40-minute sets each evening.
  • Gather Beneath Glowing Balloons: Illuminated hot-air balloons provide a striking nighttime backdrop, while Toyonaka’s Le Plus serves natural wines, food and desserts at a temporary outdoor bar. The balloons are stationary displays rather than passenger rides, and their appearance depends on the weather.

The exhibition is worth visiting on its own, particularly for those interested in contemporary art and nighttime photography. But the closing weekend offers the fullest experience, when the installations become the setting for a riverside gathering of music, food and light.

INFO & TIPS

Best Time to Visit

For the complete festival experience, visit during the Night Glow & Music finale on October 23–25, 2026. Arriving around 18:00 allows time to explore the light installations before the evening’s musical performances and balloon illumination.

For a quieter visit focused on the artworks, consider an earlier evening between October 16 and 22, 2026.

Weather & Balloon Displays

The illuminated hot-air balloons are scheduled only for October 23–25, 2026. Their appearance depends on suitable weather conditions, particularly wind and rain. Displays may be delayed or canceled for safety reasons.

The balloons are for viewing only; passenger rides are not offered.

Photography

The illuminated installations, riverside setting and glowing balloons offer opportunities for nighttime photography. A phone with a night-photography mode should be sufficient for casual photographs.

Be considerate of other visitors, particularly around interactive installations and pedestrian pathways. Follow any photography or equipment restrictions posted by the organizers.

Food & Drinks

Toyonaka’s Le Plus will operate a temporary natural-wine bar during the October 23–25 finale, offering food and desserts alongside drinks.

Food and beverages are sold separately. The bar is not part of the October 16–22 exhibition program.

What to Wear

The exhibition takes place outdoors along the waterfront. Autumn evenings can feel cooler near the river, so bring an extra layer.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended because the installations are distributed across several areas of Nakanoshima Park.

Accessibility

Nakanoshima Park has paved pedestrian routes, but the exhibition extends across multiple outdoor locations, including garden paths and bridge approaches. Surface conditions and access to individual installations may vary.

Visitors requiring step-free access should consult the organizer for specific arrangements. Detailed event-specific accessibility information has not been published.

Admission & Reservations

Admission is free throughout October 16–25, 2026, including the October 23–25 finale. No advance reservations are required.

Official Updates

Check the organizer’s website or Instagram account before visiting, particularly during the finale weekend when weather may affect the balloon displays and outdoor programming.
