Zigzag: A Rock Ritual
Japanese rock trio Zigzag celebrates its 10th anniversary at Osaka-jō Hall with a spectacular fusion of heavy music, theatrical imagery, humor and a uniquely Japanese concert tradition.

Imagine a rock concert where the musicians resemble mysterious figures from a Japanese shrine, the audience becomes a congregation, and thunderous guitars share the stage with festival-style celebrations. Welcome to the extraordinary world of -Shintenchi Kaibyaku Shudan- Zigzag (真天地開闢集団-ジグザグ), a Japanese rock trio celebrating its 10th anniversary at Osaka-jō Hall on December 13, 2026. For the uninitiated, this is no ordinary rock show.
Formed in 2016, Zigzag have built a devoted following through an imaginative combination of heavy metal, melodic rock, visual-kei theatricality and mischievous humor. The three members—Mikoto (命) on vocals and guitar, Ryuya (龍矢) on bass and Kagemaru (影丸) on drums—inhabit a distinctive world inspired by Japanese spiritual imagery. Their concerts are called misogi (禊), a term associated with ritual purification, while fans are affectionately known as sanpaisha (参拝者), or worshippers. It’s a playful theatrical concept rather than a conventional religious ceremony.
Yet beneath the elaborate costumes and unusual terminology lies serious musical talent. Zigzag move effortlessly between ferocious guitar riffs, soaring melodies and songs filled with infectious humor. Their repertoire even includes anime themes, such as “P0WER -Akuryo Taisan-,” recorded for Hell Teacher Nūbē. The result is a band that can be thunderously intense one moment and unexpectedly funny the next.
Their live performances take that contrast even further. At a December 2025 concert at Tokyo Garden Theater, Japanese music journalists described an opening featuring temple bells, enormous ceremonial fans and Mikoto arriving on a portable shrine through a towering torii gate. The spectacle gave way to powerful rock performances, playful audience chants and synchronized dancing—a vivid demonstration of Zigzag’s ability to transform a concert into something resembling a Japanese festival.
A decade after their formation, the trio have graduated from smaller venues to major arenas, developing an increasingly ambitious approach to live performance. Their anniversary celebrations include concerts in Tokyo and Osaka, with Osaka-jō Hall providing a fitting stage for ten years of musical evolution.
For longtime worshippers and curious newcomers alike, this anniversary misogi promises an encounter with one of Japan’s most imaginative rock acts. Just don’t expect an ordinary concert.

THE EXPERIENCE
Zigzag’s concerts are built around an unusual combination of musical intensity, theatrical imagination and audience participation. Their 10th-anniversary performance brings that distinctive world to one of Osaka’s best-known arenas.
- Meet the Three Members — Vocalist and guitarist Mikoto (命), bassist Ryuya (龍矢) and drummer Kagemaru (影丸) combine technical musicianship with carefully developed stage personas.
- Enter the World of Misogi — Zigzag calls its concerts misogi, borrowing a Japanese term associated with ritual purification. Fans are known as sanpaisha, or worshippers, giving the band’s performances their own playful vocabulary and traditions.
- Expect Musical Contrasts — The trio’s repertoire ranges from aggressive metal and hard rock to emotional melodies and humorous compositions. Their music also reaches anime audiences through songs such as “P0WER -Akuryo Taisan-,” associated with Hell Teacher Nūbē.
- Discover Their Theatrical Style — At a December 2025 Tokyo Garden Theater concert, the band incorporated ceremonial fans, a portable shrine, a torii gate and festival-inspired staging. These documented examples illustrate their creative approach, although the December 2026 production may differ.
- Join the Audience Energy — Previous concerts have featured coordinated chants, playful exchanges and moments of synchronized dancing. The band’s relationship with its audience is an important part of the experience, even for newcomers unfamiliar with its traditions.
- Celebrate a Decade of Growth — From smaller live venues to major arenas, Zigzag have developed an increasingly ambitious performance style. The Osaka-jō Hall anniversary concert marks ten years of that evolution.
Whether you’re a longtime sanpaisha or discovering Zigzag for the first time, the appeal lies in the contrast: formidable rock musicianship delivered with an imagination that rarely takes itself too seriously.
