Walk out of Osaka Station on Saturday night and you may find something unexpected waiting in the middle of Umeda: a full-scale BMX competition.
TOYO TIRES Downtown BMX 2026 returns to Grand Front Osaka’s Umekita Plaza on August 29, transforming one of the city’s busiest public spaces into a temporary urban racecourse. From 18:30–21:00, elite riders will race beneath the lights —and spectators can watch completely free.
Downtown BMX isn’t quite traditional BMX Racing, and it isn’t a freestyle demonstration. The competition combines the speed and head-to-head excitement of racing with the jumps, tricks, and technical skills associated with freestyle. Riders tackle a purpose-built course featuring a steep start hill, multiple jumps, a quarter-pipe turn, a TOYO TIRES tire obstacle, and a huge final jump where airtime can actually determine who advances.
The format keeps the action fast. Sixteen men and eight women compete in head-to-head knockout races, with two riders on the course at a time. The first rider across the finish earns a point, and the first to two points advances. If the riders split their first two races 1–1, the competition takes a distinctly freestyle turn: the rider who achieves the higher final jump advances.
The field brings together leading riders from BMX Racing, freestyle, and street disciplines, including defending Downtown BMX champion Asuma Nakai and athletes with Olympic experience. Lights, music, and sound add to the nighttime atmosphere, turning the competition into an entertainment spectacle as riders race, jump, and battle their way through the bracket.
This will be the fourth Downtown BMX competition staged at Umekita Plaza, with riders competing for an increased ¥4.35 million total prize purse. The men’s winner will take home ¥1.5 million and the women’s winner ¥1 million, with organizers describing it as the largest prize purse for a BMX Racing competition in Japan.
But the location may be the biggest attraction of all. Rather than heading to a distant sports venue, spectators can step directly out of the Osaka/Umeda station complex and into the action. Surrounded by Grand Front Osaka’s restaurants, cafés, shops, and nightlife, it’s an easy event to build into a Saturday evening in Umeda—even for visitors who have never watched BMX before.
There are no tickets and no reservations required for spectators—just show up and watch. The event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Umekita Plaza sits directly on the north side of JR Osaka Station, making Downtown BMX exceptionally easy to reach from anywhere in the city.
- JR Lines: Osaka Station → use the north side of the station and follow signs for Grand Front Osaka / Umekita Plaza.
- Hankyu Lines: Osaka-umeda Station → approximately 5–10 minutes on foot toward Grand Front Osaka.

Spectator admission to Downtown BMX is completely free, making it an easy event to add to a Saturday evening in Umeda.

- Heat: Late August evenings can still be hot and humid in Osaka, so bring water and dress for summer weather.
- Food & Drink: Grand Front Osaka and the surrounding Osaka Station area have extensive restaurants, cafés, bars, and convenience stores; event-specific food vendors have not been announced.
- Viewing: There are no reserved spectator areas, so arrive early if being close to the course is important.
