Every summer, Shin Umeda City celebrates one of Japan’s most cherished seasonal traditions as Tanabata at Umeda Sky Building returns from June 1 through August 8, 2026. Marking its 20th anniversary, this free seasonal event transforms the plazas surrounding the iconic landmark with colorful Sendai-inspired streamers, bamboo wish displays, and special anniversary activities that add a peaceful touch of Japanese tradition to the heart of Osaka.
Tanabata at Umeda Sky Building invites visitors to slow down, stroll beneath the vibrant decorations, and experience the centuries-old custom of writing wishes on tanzaku before hanging them on bamboo. Throughout the celebration, the plazas surrounding the Umeda Sky Building become one of Osaka’s most photogenic summer settings, especially during golden hour and after sunset when the colorful displays stand out against the modern skyline.
The 20th anniversary also features special events on July 4, 5, and 7, including children’s festival games, illuminated bamboo lanterns, and live jazz performances. Admission to Umeda Tanabata is free. Visitors are welcome to explore the colorful Sendai-style decorations throughout Shin Umeda City without purchasing a ticket.
Writing a wish on a tanzaku is available during the Tanabata period through participating Takimi Koji restaurants while supplies last and may require a qualifying purchase.
The special 20th Anniversary events—including the Children's Ennichi, Bamboo Lantern Display, and Live Jazz performances on July 4, 5, and 7—are also free to attend and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
