Osaka River Fantasy
A 100-meter musical fountain erupts across Osaka’s riverfront every 30 minutes after sunset, bringing music, light and water to Hachikenyahama through early 2027.
The Expo is over, but Osaka decided this spectacle was worth keeping.
Every evening after sunset, fountains erupt across more than 100 meters of the Okawa at Hachikenyahama, moving to music as colored lights illuminate the water. OSAKA River Fantasy runs every 30 minutes until 22:00, and watching from the riverfront is completely free.
The scale is what makes it worth stopping for. More than 50 swinging fountain nozzles create a panorama of moving water stretching across the river, synchronized with music and nighttime illumination. Shows begin on the hour and half-hour and last approximately 10 minutes, turning the Hachikenyahama waterfront into one of Osaka’s easiest nighttime photo stops.
And there is more than one way to frame the shot. Watch from Hachikenyahama for a close view of the fountains or cross the river for a wider panorama with the illuminated city behind them. Sightseeing cruises offer another perspective from water level, where the sound, movement and spray make the show considerably more immersive. Osaka Prefecture itself recommends experiencing River Fantasy from a boat.
The spectacle debuted in 2025 as part of Osaka’s Expo-era transformation of its waterfront. The original River Fantasy spread across three locations, adding projection mapping on the Higashi-Yokobori River and the Minamo Wide Vision at Nakanoshima GATE. Those installations belonged to the Expo-era program, but Osaka kept the giant Hachikenyahama fountain, carrying it forward under Beyond EXPO 2025 as part of its continuing focus on the city’s waterfront and nighttime appeal.
Through October, there is even a way to make River Fantasy the finale. The seasonal Yorimichi Sunset Cruise travels through the central waterways around Temmabashi, Tenjinbashi, Naniwabashi, Nakanoshima and Kitahama before finishing with the fountain show.
River Fantasy doesn’t require planning your night around it. Have dinner around Temmabashi or Kitahama, walk through Nakanoshima after dark, or simply stop at Hachikenyahama on your way somewhere else. Give it ten minutes while you’re already in the neighborhood. Osaka built it for the Expo; now it’s another reason to stop beside the river after dark.

Walking Directions
The easiest route is from Keihan Temmabashi Station: leave through the East Gate and use Exit 17, which brings you directly to Hachikenyahama.
From Metro Temmabashi, use Exit 2 and walk north approximately five minutes toward the Okawa riverfront.
The fountain installation extends along the right-bank revetment of the Okawa at Hachikenyahama. There is no enclosed event entrance or admission gate.

Each performance lasts approximately 10 minutes.
The exact first show changes with the season because performances begin around sunset. Show times may also be adjusted by the organizer.
Weather
The fountain normally operates every day, including in rain. Strong winds, severe weather or other operating conditions can result in cancellation, including cancellations announced on short notice. Check the official website on questionable-weather days.
TICKETS
Riverfront Viewing
Free
No ticket or reservation is required to watch OSAKA River Fantasy from land. Simply arrive at Hachikenyahama and find a viewing position along the riverfront.
Cruise Viewing
Cruises and other water activities that include River Fantasy are separately operated and priced. Tickets should be purchased directly from the participating cruise operator.

Yorimichi Sunset Cruise
September 4–October 31, 2026
Fridays & Saturdays only
The approximately 25-minute twilight cruise passes Temmabashi, Tenjinbashi, Naniwabashi, Nakanoshima Park and Kitahama, with OSAKA River Fantasy appearing near the end of the cruise.

River Fantasy is easy to enjoy spontaneously: arrive after sunset and decide whether you want a close view, a wider photograph or a water-level experience.

- Cross to the opposite bank for a wider panorama across the Okawa.
- Bring your phone or camera—the illuminated fountains make this an easy nighttime photo stop.
- Stay for another show if you want to try a different viewing position; performances repeat every 30 minutes.
- Take a sightseeing cruise for a closer experience of the spray, sound and movement from river level.
With each show lasting about 10 minutes, River Fantasy works equally well as the destination for an evening walk or a quick stop between dinner and whatever comes next.
INFO & TIPS
Best Time to Go
Wait until it is properly dark if photography is your priority. The colored illumination and surrounding city lights become a much bigger part of the scene after nightfall.
Where to Watch
Hachikenyahama gives you the closest straightforward land-based experience. Osaka Prefecture also specifically notes that the show can be enjoyed from the opposite bank, making that worth considering when you want the entire fountain installation in one view.
Photography
Personal photography and video are permitted without advance permission. Keep pedestrian routes clear and do not use large equipment or tripods that interfere with other visitors. Drone photography is prohibited.
Cruise or Land?
You absolutely do not need a cruise to see River Fantasy. Land viewing is free. A cruise is the premium experience: Osaka Prefecture recommends water-level viewing for the added sensation of spray, vibration, light and sound.

Normal rain does not automatically stop the show. Strong winds and severe weather can, however, cause sudden cancellations. Check the official NEWS page before traveling when conditions are questionable:

Parking
There is no dedicated visitor parking at the venue. Use nearby paid parking or, preferably, public transportation.
Pair It With
River Fantasy is particularly easy to combine with dinner around Temmabashi or Kitahama, an evening walk through Nakanoshima, or a longer riverside walk. Because another show begins every 30 minutes, you don’t need to build your entire evening around catching a particular performance.
