Nishiumeda Candle Night

A walkable gallery of light

Thousands of candles transform Nishiumeda into a walkable gallery of light, with candle art, glowing pathways and a district-wide Lights Off program creating one of Osaka’s most atmospheric nights.

Screenshot

For most of the year, Nishiumeda is a place people move through rather than linger in. Office workers hurry between towers, commuters flow in and out of Osaka Station, and shoppers weave between some of the city’s busiest commercial complexes. Twice a year, NISHIUMEDA CANDLE NIGHT changes the pace, filling plazas, pathways and public spaces with thousands of candles and turning one of Osaka’s most modern districts into a glowing landscape of flickering light.

The winter edition returns December 9 from 16:00–21:00, with candles scheduled to be lit from 17:00. Candle art created by Kansai artists and student groups will form the Candle Corridor through Nishiumeda, while handmade Nishi-Ume Andon lanterns add messages and wishes to the displays. Nishiumeda Park will again host a large-scale installation by CANDLE JUNE, and participating buildings throughout the district will dim portions of their lighting during the Lights Off program. Christmas concerts, markets, workshops, candle dining and other programs are also planned at surrounding facilities, with details to be announced.

From Nishiumeda Park, the event expands outward through the Candle Corridor, connecting locations including Herbis PLAZA and PLAZA ENT, Hilton Plaza East and West, Breezé Breezé, JP Tower Osaka and the Mainichi Building. Rather than being confined to a single venue, Candle Night encourages visitors to wander, discover new viewpoints and experience parts of Umeda they might otherwise overlook.

For photographers and visitors exploring Osaka, the appeal is obvious. Candlelight reflects against modern architecture, handmade lanterns illuminate plazas and walkways, and familiar city streets take on a different character after sunset. Arriving around the 17:00 candle-lighting period lets visitors watch that transformation unfold from daylight into darkness.

The tradition reaches back to 2005, when 1000000 People’s Candle Night @ OSAKA CITY began encouraging people to switch off electric lights and spend time thinking about environmental and social issues. Today’s NISHIUMEDA CANDLE NIGHT carries that philosophy forward as a twice-yearly community event. The December 2026 edition marks 21 years of candlelight in Nishiumeda.

Part art installation, part community gathering and part evening walk, NISHIUMEDA CANDLE NIGHT offers a side of Osaka that can seem impossible in the middle of one of Japan’s busiest commercial districts. For one night, Nishiumeda deliberately turns down the brightness and invites everyone to slow down and follow the glow.

INFO & TIPS

Best Time to Visit
Arrive around 17:00 as the candles are being lit. This gives you time to experience the transition into darkness before exploring the installations throughout Nishiumeda.

Walking Route
The event covers a district rather than a single venue. Nishiumeda Park is a useful starting point, followed by the Candle Corridor through Herbis, Hilton Plaza, JP Tower Osaka and other participating locations.

Photography
The contrast between candlelight and Nishiumeda’s modern architecture makes the event especially photogenic after sunset. Be considerate around installations and follow any photography restrictions posted by individual facilities.

Christmas Programs
Concerts, markets, handmade workshops, candle dining and other winter programs are planned at participating facilities. The detailed December schedule has not yet been released.

Weather
Much of Candle Night takes place outdoors. If rain prevents the December 9 event from proceeding, the official rain date is December 10, 2026. Check the official website or social media before traveling if the weather is uncertain.

Accessibility
The Nishiumeda district is served by major stations and modern commercial facilities with elevators and step-free routes. Accessibility can vary between individual outdoor installations and participating venues.

Food & Drinks
Nishiumeda has extensive restaurants, cafés and bars throughout the event area. Special candle-dining programs are planned for December, with details still to be announced.

Lights Off
Participating buildings will temporarily reduce their lighting during the event, allowing the candles to become more prominent. The December Lights Off time has not yet been announced—do not carry forward June’s 20:00–21:30 schedule.
