Gyoza Gets Creative in Umeda

40+ Dumplings Meet 30+ Craft Beers at Hanshin

Craft Gyoza Fes comes indoors at Hanshin Umeda, pairing more than 40 traditional and inventive dumplings with 30+ Japanese craft beers. The recurring food festival returns to Shokusai Terrace for six days of gyoza tasting in the heart of Umeda.

Lamb and celery. Salt butter and truffle. Mentaiko and cheese. Lemon. Wagyu horumon. There’s even a sweet-potato honey-lemon dessert gyoza. Some people put pork and cabbage in a gyoza. Others apparently see the wrapper as a challenge.

More than 40 varieties have gathered at Hanshin Umeda for Craft Gyoza Fes & Hanshin Beer Bar Vol. 8, a six-day celebration of just how far you can push one of Japan’s favorite dumplings.

Running through September 7 at the department store’s 1F Shokusai Terrace, the event is the indoor sibling of Craft Gyoza Fes, the big outdoor food festival that has staged Osaka editions at Osaka Castle Park. Here, its endless-gyoza philosophy gets condensed into an easy Umeda tasting experience: pick a few plates, find a beer and start comparing.

This edition puts plenty of imagination inside the wrappers. Kyoto Gyoza enen brings salt-butter-truffle gyoza, TOKI PAO pairs lamb with celery in a juicy boiled dumpling, Kyoto Gyoza Miyako Panda adds Wakayama lemon peel, and Hakata Hachisuke combines mentaiko and cheese. Elsewhere you’ll find everything from abalone and scallop broth to sakura shrimp, mushrooms, Oita pork and even that sweet-potato honey-lemon dessert gyoza.

Prefer your gyoza to behave like gyoza? You’re covered too. Regional and traditional styles sit alongside the experiments, making half the fun simply ordering several plates and deciding which approach wins.

Then there’s the beer — and here, an OSAKA SCENE favorite, HARENOHI, takes over.

The Tanimachi 4-chome gyoza-and-craft-beer specialist is running the drink booth for Vol. 8, bringing its pairing expertise to Hanshin with roughly 20–25 beers selected from around 10 breweries. The rotating taps include brewers such as Minoh Beer, Kyoto Brewing, Black Tide Brewing and Bear Bottle.

There’s also an event-exclusive Craft Gyoza & HANSHIN Akikaze Ale, brewed by Osaka’s Craft Beer Base as a dry, refreshing partner for the dumplings.

The Hanshin event grew out of the department store’s own gyoza gatherings before joining forces with Craft Gyoza Fes in 2024. It has since become a recurring Shokusai Terrace event, taking the idea behind the outdoor festival and shrinking it into something particularly suited to Umeda: drop in, try several things and keep moving.

The result is less destination mega-festival and more gyoza playground in the middle of Umeda. Order something familiar, order something that sounds completely ridiculous, split both with a friend — and see which one disappears first.

Taste 40+ Gyoza – Compare classic regional dumplings with creative fillings ranging from truffle butter and lemon to lamb, mentaiko cheese and dessert gyoza.

Find the Festival Exclusives – Try special gyoza created for this edition alongside signature dishes from participating shops.

Explore 30+ Craft Beers – Pair your plates with a rotating selection of Japanese craft beers from breweries around the country.

Let HARENOHI Pour – OSAKA SCENE favorite HARENOHI takes charge of the beer booth, selecting brews to pair with the festival’s gyoza.

Build Your Own Tasting – Order a few contrasting plates, add a beer flight and turn a quick Umeda stop into your own gyoza showdown.

THE SCENE: FAQ’s

Address: 1-13-13 Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-8224

Trains: JR Kyoto / Kobe / Takarazuka / Osaka Loop Lines → Osaka Station → Central or Sakurabashi side → approximately 5 minutes on foot. Hanshin Line → Osaka-Umeda Station → directly beside Hanshin Umeda.

Subways: Osaka Metro Midosuji Line → Umeda Station → approximately 5 minutes on foot. Tanimachi Line → Higashi-Umeda Station → approximately 5 minutes. Yotsubashi Line → Nishi-Umeda Station → approximately 5 minutes.

Once inside Hanshin Umeda, head to Shokusai Terrace on 1F, the department store’s dedicated rotating food-event space.

SCHEDULE

September 2–6: 10:00–20:00
September 7: 10:00–17:00

Craft Gyoza Fes & Hanshin Beer Bar Vol. 8 runs continuously during department-store hours rather than following a performance schedule. Gyoza vendors, the Hanshin Beer Bar and HARENOHI’s rotating craft-beer selection are available throughout the event.

TICKETS

There is no admission ticket. Visitors purchase whichever gyoza and drinks they want inside Shokusai Terrace.

Most gyoza plates are roughly ¥650–¥1,500, depending on the vendor and dish. Examples this edition include shiso-cheese gyoza at ¥800 for five, sweet-potato honey-lemon gyoza at ¥1,080 for eight, and several special plates in the ¥650–¥900 range.

The event-exclusive Craft Gyoza & HANSHIN Akikaze Ale is ¥990 for 310 ml. Beer tasting options and other individual beers are also available.

THE EXPERIENCE

Think of this as Craft Gyoza Fes condensed into an indoor Umeda tasting session rather than a sprawling outdoor festival.

  • Start Familiar – Grab a classic grilled or regional gyoza before venturing into the more experimental creations.
  • Try Something Strange – Truffle butter, lamb and celery, lemon, mentaiko cheese and dessert gyoza make comparison half the fun.
  • Share the Plates – Going with someone else makes it much easier to sample several vendors without filling up on the first order.
  • Pair the Beer – HARENOHI curates a changing Japanese craft-beer selection designed to accompany the food.
  • Find the Exclusives – Several gyoza and the special Akikaze Ale have been created specifically for this edition.

Come hungry enough to experiment. The fun isn’t finding one perfect plate; it’s putting several very different interpretations of gyoza side by side.

INFO & TIPS

Go With Friends: Many orders contain four to eight gyoza. Sharing plates is the easiest way to try several vendors without reaching your dumpling limit too quickly.

Not Just Beer: The drink selection also includes lemon sours, highballs, shochu, non-alcoholic beer, special green tea, juices and other soft drinks.

Beer Changes: HARENOHI’s craft-beer selection rotates during the event, so a particular brewery or beer may not be available every day.

Check the Price First: Gyoza prices vary considerably according to ingredients and portion size, with this edition ranging roughly from the mid-¥600s into the ¥1,000+ range.

Last Day Is Short: Don’t plan a Monday-evening visit. September 7 closes at 17:00.

Allergies: With fillings ranging from seafood and dairy to meat, mushrooms and citrus, check ingredients with the individual vendor if you have food allergies. I would not import the outdoor Craft Gyoza Fes allergy procedures into this Hanshin event unless Hanshin confirms them separately.
