Osaka Castle Autumn Festival

Samurai, Matchlock Guns and the Toyotomi Legacy

Samurai warriors, booming matchlock guns and traditional war drums bring Japan’s feudal history to life at Osaka Castle’s two-day Autumn Festival, celebrating the Toyotomi legacy beneath the city’s most famous landmark.

The sound of matchlock gunfire will echo across Osaka Castle once again this November, as historical warriors, traditional drummers and representatives from castles across Japan gather for the Osaka Castle Autumn Festival.

Held November 7–8, 2026, in the square directly in front of the Main Tower, the annual celebration brings the city’s dramatic feudal history into the present through live demonstrations, performances and cultural exhibits.

This year’s theme, Toyotomi-ha! (The Toyotomi Faction!), places Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his younger brother Hidenaga at the center of the festivities. Castles and communities connected to the brothers are joining the celebration, including Nagahama, Wakayama, Yamatokoriyama and Nagoya, where Hideyoshi was born.

Saturday’s program welcomes the Nagoya Omotenashi Bushotai, a troupe of costumed historical warriors who portray famous figures from Japan’s Sengoku period. Their performances bring the personalities and pageantry of the samurai era to the castle grounds.

November 7 also marks the 95th anniversary of the reconstructed Osaka Castle Main Tower. To celebrate, Osaka jazz musicians will perform brass-band arrangements inspired by music from the period of the tower’s 1931 reconstruction, adding an unexpected musical chapter to the castle’s long history.

Sunday brings a more thunderous spectacle.

The Osaka Castle Gunnery Corps demonstrates traditional matchlock firearms, preserving techniques associated with the Inatomi school of gunnery. The sharp reports of the guns and clouds of smoke offer a powerful reminder of the weapons that transformed warfare during Japan’s turbulent 16th century.

The Shinshu Ueda Sanada Jindaiko Preservation Society follows with traditional war-drum performances celebrating the Sanada clan, whose history is closely connected to the Siege of Osaka. This year’s gathering also commemorates 20 years of friendship between Osaka Castle and Ueda Castle.

Throughout both days, participating cities and historical organizations introduce their castles, local traditions and cultural attractions. Visitors can discover regional specialties, explore historical displays and take part in selected hands-on activities, including family-friendly workshops.

The two-day festival is part of a wider celebration of Osaka Castle’s reconstructed Main Tower’s 95th anniversary, with food trucks, historical exhibits and other activities continuing near Sakuramon Gate through November 29.

The setting makes the experience particularly memorable. With Osaka Castle’s towering white walls and green roofs rising above the square, the performances unfold against a landmark that has witnessed centuries of conflict, reconstruction and change.

For two autumn days, the castle becomes a gathering place for the people and places that continue to preserve those stories.
