Takeover Fest Returns with Vol.2

Southern hip-hop meets Japanese pop nostalgia as Takeover Fest returns to Hirakata on December 12. Featuring international artists, Kansai Future Funk DJs, and a mix of music, art, and fashion, this independent club night brings fresh energy to sounds from Japan’s past.

Japanese musical nostalgia gets a hard-hitting hip-hop makeover when Takeover Fest Vol.2 lands at club&bar mono in Hirakata on December 12. Billed as Heisei Bounce vs Future Funk, the independent event brings together live performances, DJ sets, fashion, and gaming for a night of heavy beats, infectious grooves, and reimagined sounds from Japan’s past.

Behind the event is Takeover Studios, whose TKVR clothing venture connects music with art and fashion. Now in its second edition, Takeover Fest stages a friendly rivalry between two musical styles that find different ways to reinvent the past.

Heisei Bounce combines Southern American hip-hop with samples from Japan’s Shōwa and Heisei eras. Houston-raised rapper Defiant Darīus, whose releases include Southern Hustler and Mo City Soldier, joins recording artist Lily Wraith and Hirakata-connected producer YESI, who produced Wraith’s 2026 single Out of Focus. Phantom Grooves and JCTranquility complete the lineup.

Facing them is Future Funk, an electronic dance genre that transforms vintage pop, disco, and funk samples into punchy, high-energy grooves. Kansai producer Unachan, organizer of the FUTURE JACK club series, is joined by Chlophonic, connected to Southern California’s Yoisho club, and Honolulu-based DJ Mr. Chibes, whose mixes explore Japanese disco edits. DJ Zax completes the Future Funk lineup.

But this friendly musical rivalry has an unexpected twist. Takeover Fest Vol.2 marks the debut of Takeover Fest: Clash in Rocket City, an original fighting video game developed by Take, founder of Takeover Studios. Featuring the night’s artists and DJs as playable characters, the game gives attendees a chance to step into the action as the very performers they’re watching onstage. Set in Takeover Studios’ original anime universe, Rocket City, the game is accompanied by original artwork. TKVR clothing and official merchandise will also be available.

Cam Murdoch, founder of Future Surf Radio, hosts the evening, introducing and interviewing artists. At the intimate, off-the-radar club&bar mono, near Kansai Gaidai University’s Campus in Hirakata, Takeover Fest brings underground music, gaming, and independent creative culture together beyond Osaka’s familiar nightlife districts.
