Zakoba Market Celebrates 60

World Shrimp Festival Headlines Osaka’s Morning Market

Come hungry and come early. Zakoba Morning Market brings seafood, street food, auctions and hands-on experiences to Osaka’s Central Wholesale Market district four times a year.

Tuna is broken down in front of a crowd. Shoppers join a market-style auction. Families arrive hungry for breakfast, while children get closer to where their food comes from than a supermarket visit normally allows. At 8:00 on a Sunday morning, Osaka’s wholesale market district becomes a festival.

This is Zakoba Morning Market, a recurring food and family event held beside Osaka’s Central Wholesale Market in Fukushima-ku. Four times a year, dozens of stalls fill the riverside venue with seafood, prepared foods, local specialties, vegetables and sweets.

The September 27 market marks Zakoba’s 60th edition, with a World Shrimp Festival theme. The day’s program includes food stalls, a public auction, fish-cutting demonstration, sanma-eating contest and stage performances. Families can also reserve a place in the returning parent-and-child soba-making workshop.

Seafood remains at the heart of Zakoba, but you don’t have to love fish to enjoy the morning. Recent editions have offered fried foods, udon, sweets and drinks, while vegetable sales have proved popular enough to draw lines shortly after opening. For families, previous programs have ranged from children’s work experiences and cooking activities to superhero shows, dance performances, shrimp fishing and even a version of karuta played with real fish.

Behind all that fun is a serious idea. Zakoba was developed by people connected to Osaka’s wholesale market around shokuiku — food education. The goal is to help visitors, particularly children, understand where food comes from and encounter the ingredients, skills and people behind what they eat.

Even the name reaches back into Osaka history. Zakoba (雑喉場) was associated with the fish market that developed around Enokojima during the Edo period. In 1931, Zakoba and other specialized markets were consolidated into the newly opened Osaka Central Wholesale Market. The modern event revived the name, connecting today’s family festival with that older market tradition.

Today, the result feels part morning market, part food festival and part neighborhood matsuri. Come early, come hungry and see what’s happening. And if the 60th doesn’t fit your schedule, the next Zakoba Morning Market is already set for November 8.

Taste the Morning Market – Browse dozens of stalls serving seafood, prepared foods, local specialties, vegetables, sweets and more.

Join the Market Action – Watch fish-cutting demonstrations and experience the excitement of a public market-style auction.

Celebrate 60 at Zakoba – The September edition marks the milestone with a World Shrimp Festival and special activities.

Bring the Family – Kids can discover where food comes from through cooking, workshops and hands-on food experiences.

Experience an Osaka Tradition – See how the spirit of the historic Zakoba fish market lives on beside today’s Central Wholesale Market.

SCHEDULE

The 60th Zakoba Morning Market takes place Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 8:00–14:00. Admission is free.

This edition celebrates a World Shrimp Festival, alongside Zakoba’s recurring mix of food stalls, market experiences, food education and family activities. The announced program includes a public auction, fish-cutting demonstration, sanma-eating contest and stage performances.

Parent & Child Soba Making: Three sessions are scheduled:

9:30–10:30
11:00–12:00
12:30–13:30

Each session is limited to three groups of up to four people and requires advance entry.

NEXT: The 61st Zakoba Morning Market is scheduled for November 8, 2026. The next round of vendor applications is scheduled to open September 28, with visitor program details expected later.

TICKETS

General Admission: Free

No ticket or reservation is required to enter the morning market. Individual food, merchandise and paid experiences are purchased separately.

Parent & Child Soba Making: ¥3,000 per group of up to four people. Each group makes 500 g of soba, approximately four to five servings. Children must be elementary-school age or older, and the group must include both an adult and child, although they do not literally have to be parent and child.

The workshop requires advance entry and has extremely limited capacity: only three groups per session. The current application deadline is September 13 at 12:00, with participants selected by lottery if applications exceed capacity.

THE EXPERIENCE

Zakoba mixes the energy of a morning market with food education and the atmosphere of a neighborhood festival.

  • Eat Your Way Around – Browse seafood, prepared foods, local specialties, vegetables, sweets and drinks from dozens of vendors.
  • Watch the Market Action – Auctions and fish-cutting demonstrations bring some of the working wholesale-market culture into public view.
  • Bring the Kids – Hands-on food experiences, workshops and entertainment make Zakoba particularly family friendly.
  • Expect Something Different – Past editions have included shrimp fishing, cooking experiences, superhero shows, dance performances and even karuta played with real fish.
  • Stay for the Festival – Stage performances and community entertainment give the riverside market an omatsuri-like atmosphere beyond the food stalls.

Come for breakfast and the bargains, but leave some time for whatever unusual activity Zakoba has planned for that edition.

INFO & TIPS

Come Early: Take the word morning seriously. First-hand visitor reports describe substantial crowds and lines shortly after the 8:00 opening, particularly around popular sales and activities.

Bring a Leisure Sheet: Seating can be difficult to find when the market is busy. A small picnic sheet gives you somewhere to sit along the outdoor venue and eat what you’ve bought.

Bring Cash: With numerous independent market and food stalls, carrying cash is sensible even if individual vendors offer cashless payment.

Weather: Zakoba is primarily an outdoor riverside event. Check the organizer’s website and social media for last-minute announcements if the forecast is poor.

Families: Many activities are designed specifically around food education for children, but individual workshops can have age restrictions, fees or advance-registration requirements.

Soba Workshop: Capacity is tiny, so don’t plan on arranging this after arriving. Advance application is required.

No Event Parking: Public transportation is strongly recommended. Tamagawa Station is the closest subway option at approximately eight minutes on foot.

Next Market: If you miss September 27, Zakoba is already scheduled to return November 8, 2026. The event normally takes place in March, May, September and November.
