The Boxer Who Lost His Words
A boxer trades his voice for fame in Shishi THE LION-BEAT, a contemporary musical inspired by Shuji Terayama’s long-unseen play, blending theatrical storytelling, music and explosive choreography.
What would you sacrifice to achieve your greatest dream? For one aspiring boxer, the price is his voice. In Shishi THE LION-BEAT, a young man makes a mysterious bargain that transforms him into a knockout sensation—but leaves him unable to speak. The extraordinary story comes to Osaka’s Sky Theater MBS for three performances on November 7–8, 2026, bringing a rarely performed work by one of Japan’s most provocative playwrights back into the spotlight.
The story follows Sadao Yonezawa, an ordinary young man who works in a shop making personal seals and dreams of boxing glory. When a mysterious stranger offers him extraordinary fighting abilities in exchange for his words, Sadao accepts. Reborn as the formidable Takeo Arashi, he begins winning fight after fight. Yet the cheers of the crowd cannot replace the conversations, relationships and ordinary life he has surrendered.
Behind this unusual premise stands Shuji Terayama, a towering figure in Japan’s experimental arts. A poet, playwright, filmmaker and provocateur, Terayama challenged conventional ideas about theater and society. He wrote the original Shishi in 1965 for a single performance, two years before founding the influential experimental theater company Tenjō Sajiki.
Its return in 2026, the 90th anniversary of Terayama’s birth, is no conventional revival. Director Kunio Sugiharareimagines the work as a contemporary musical, with music by ☆Taku Takahashi of m-flo and choreography by Wataru Kitao. More than 20 musical numbers bring together the atmosphere of 1960s Japan, modern rhythms and the physical intensity of boxing.
Taisuke Niihara takes the central role, joined by Kana Kita and an ensemble including Tomorowo Taguchi and Satoshi Hashimoto. Movement, music and sign language become essential forms of expression in a story about the power—and limitations—of words.
The Osaka performances take place at Sky Theater MBS, a 1,289-seat venue that opened in Umeda in 2024 as the successor to the much-loved Theater BRAVA! Purpose-built for ambitious stage productions, it represents a new chapter in Osaka’s theatrical tradition—and a fitting setting for the reinvention of a Japanese avant-garde classic.

THE EXPERIENCE
Shishi THE LION-BEAT transforms an experimental Japanese theater work into a contemporary musical about ambition, identity and the power of communication. Beyond its unusual premise, the production brings together an accomplished cast, contemporary musicians and theatrical artists to reinterpret Shuji Terayama’s work for a new generation.
- The Story: Follow Sadao Yonezawa, an aspiring boxer who sacrifices his ability to speak in exchange for extraordinary fighting talent. As he becomes the celebrated Takeo Arashi, his success comes at an increasingly personal cost.
- The Music: Experience more than 20 musical numbers, with music by ☆Taku Takahashi of the influential Japanese electronic hip-hop group m-flo. The contemporary score brings a new musical dimension to Terayama’s 1965 story.
-
The Performance: Discover theatrical storytelling combining acting, choreography, boxing-inspired movement and sign language. Stage-combat specialist Naoki Kurihara trained the actors in authentic boxing movements, helping physical expression convey emotions and relationships beyond words.
- The Leading Actors: Taisuke Niihara plays the aspiring boxer at the center of the story, opposite Kana Kita. The ensemble also features veteran performers Tomorowo Taguchi and Satoshi Hashimoto, bringing experience from Japanese theater, film and television.
- The Creative Vision: Director Kunio Sugihara and playwright Yuko Kuwabara reinterpret a work originally created for a single performance in 1965. Their adaptation connects Terayama’s experimental theatrical legacy with the sensibilities of contemporary musical theater.
- The Theater: Sky Theater MBS opened in March 2024 as the successor to Theater BRAVA!, a longtime fixture of Osaka’s performing arts scene. Its 1,289-seat auditorium, purpose-built stage and central Umeda location make it an important new home for major theatrical productions.
The musical is performed in Japanese, and understanding the language will help audiences follow its dialogue and themes. Yet its emphasis on physical expression, music and movement is particularly fitting for a story about a man who has lost his words.
