Hikari Renaissance: Nakanoshima’s River of Light

Osaka’s Historic Waterfront Shines for the Holidays

From glowing riverside promenades to beloved winter installations and scenic water tours, Osaka Hikari Renaissance 2025 turns the Nakanoshima waterfront into one of the city’s most atmospheric winter walks.

Every winter, Osaka’s historic Nakanoshima waterfront becomes a glowing corridor of light. Illuminated trees line the riverside promenades, reflections shimmer across the water, and the city’s grand civic buildings provide a spectacular backdrop. Part of Osaka’s annual Festival of the Lights, the Nakanoshima illuminations transform an evening stroll through the city’s historic heart into one of its most atmospheric seasonal experiences.

A photo of the inflatable giant snowman along the Nakanoshima promenade.
Along the promenade, seasonal installations add a playful touch to the illuminations. The popular BIG Snowman has been a favorite holiday photo spot.

Running nightly from November 3 to December 31, 2026, the illuminations extend well beyond the main December festivities of OSAKA Hikari Renaissance. Visitors can enjoy the glowing waterfront from approximately 17:00 until 25:00, whether exploring the area after dinner or taking a late-night walk along the river.

The centerpiece is Nakanoshima Illumination Street, a 150-meter promenade of illuminated zelkova trees along Miotsukushi Promenade near Osaka City Hall. The trees form a luminous passage through the civic district, where visitors can walk beneath the branches and admire the changing perspectives of the surrounding architecture.

Nearby, Osaka City Hall’s illuminated façade adds another dimension to the experience. Dimensional LED lighting highlights the building’s exterior, creating a striking contrast between the modern display and the historic streetscape surrounding it.

Nakanoshima’s location between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers makes the setting especially memorable. Bridges connect the island to the surrounding city, offering views of illuminated trees, waterfront buildings and reflections across the water. The surrounding civic district is home to architectural landmarks that give the evening walk a sense of place beyond the seasonal decorations.

The waterways also offer another perspective on the illuminated city, with sightseeing boats providing an opportunity to admire Nakanoshima’s architecture and waterfront from the river.

The illuminations also have a history. OSAKA Hikari Renaissance began in 2003, helping establish Nakanoshima as one of Osaka’s signature winter destinations. Its illuminated promenade continues that tradition, welcoming visitors throughout November and December.

From December 11–25, the area becomes even livelier as the main Hikari Renaissance festival introduces additional attractions. Visitors can enjoy the Central Public Hall projection mapping, Nakanoshima concerts and Hikari Marche, and Christmas Handmade Marché, each covered separately by OSAKA SCENE with its own schedule and visitor details.

Whether enjoyed as a quiet riverside walk or combined with December’s larger festivities, Nakanoshima’s nightly illuminations offer a different perspective on Osaka after dark—one where the city’s history, architecture and waterways become part of the winter spectacle.
