Discover an Immersive Nighttime World
After the daytime crowds leave, NIFREL takes on an entirely different personality. For just 18 evenings this summer, Night NIFREL invites visitors to experience dimly lit galleries, nocturnal animals, and immersive art installations during an after-hours visit.

Most visitors know NIFREL as one of Osaka’s most imaginative attractions—a place where an aquarium, zoo, botanical displays, and contemporary art blend into a single interactive museum. During Night NIFREL, however, that familiar experience changes completely. After regular closing time, the lights dim, the background music is switched off, and the museum slows to the rhythm of the animals themselves, creating one of Osaka’s most unusual summer evenings.
The limited-time event, open July 31-August 7 and August 17-23, gives guests the rare opportunity to observe species during their natural evening hours. Aquariums glow softly in the darkness, nocturnal animals become increasingly active, and the atmosphere throughout the museum becomes noticeably calmer than during the day. The experience encourages visitors to linger, observe, and appreciate behaviors that are often missed during regular daytime visits. One highlight is the 2F “Movement” zone, where the nocturnal Southern three-banded armadillo becomes especially active after sunset.
The experience also reflects the philosophy behind NIFREL itself. The museum’s name comes from the Japanese phrase kansei ni fureru (“to touch the senses”), and its exhibits are designed around how visitors experience the natural world rather than traditional categories like aquariums or zoos. Night NIFREL extends that idea by encouraging guests to discover familiar spaces through darkness, quiet, scent, and the changing behaviors of animals after sunset.
One of this year’s biggest additions is NIFREL’s new Poison zone, which opened in March 2026. During Night NIFREL, visitors can watch emperor scorpions fluoresce beneath ultraviolet light while learning about the remarkable adaptations of venomous species through special nighttime interpretation available only during the event. It creates one of the evening’s most memorable visual moments and offers returning visitors something entirely new to discover.
Elsewhere, the museum’s spectacular WONDER MOMENTS installation introduces a refreshing seasonal fragrance that complements its immersive projections, while the second-floor café serves selected Poison-themed menu items at discounted evening prices. Every guest also receives a glow-in-the-dark wristband and can collect a limited-edition Night NIFREL commemorative stamp, turning an evening visit into a memorable summer keepsake.
With cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and a completely different atmosphere from the daytime museum, Night NIFREL offers one of Osaka’s most distinctive family-friendly summer outings. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to see the museum in a new light, these limited after-hours sessions reveal a side of NIFREL that few visitors ever experience.
