HandMade In Japan Makes Its Osaka Debut

Japan’s Creative Spirit Comes to Osaka for Christmas

Japan’s celebrated handmade festival arrives in Osaka with independent creators, one-of-a-kind gifts, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, and a special Christmas marketplace.

Japan’s handmade revolution is coming to Osaka. After more than a decade of bringing independent artists and makers together in Tokyo, HandMade In Japan Fes’ (HMJ) makes its Kansai debut at INTEX Osaka on December 12–13, 2026. Organized by the popular Japanese handmade marketplace Creema, the two-day celebration brings together approximately 1,700 creator appearances across the weekend, transforming the exhibition hall into a sprawling showcase of Japanese craftsmanship, imagination, and individual expression.

First launched at Tokyo Big Sight in 2013, HandMade In Japan Fes’ has grown into one of the country’s major celebrations of independent creativity. Its arrival in Osaka marks the first step in a nationwide expansion, bringing the festival’s distinctive mix of shopping, entertainment, and personal encounters with makers to a new audience. From delicate jewelry and handcrafted ceramics to original fashion, artwork, and imaginative home accessories, the appeal lies in discovering objects that simply don’t exist on ordinary store shelves.

And there’s something particularly special about meeting the people behind those creations. Visitors can talk directly with artists about their techniques, learn the stories behind individual pieces, and even discuss custom orders. It’s a chance to discover not only what someone has made, but why they made it.

For its Osaka debut, the festival is embracing the holiday season with a Christmas Special Edition. A dedicated marketplace will feature festive wreaths, ornaments, and unusual gifts created especially for the occasion. Some exhibitors will offer personalized commissions and gift wrapping, while others bring inventive seasonal creations that carry the celebrations from Christmas into the Japanese New Year.

But HMJ is about much more than shopping. Thirty-five varieties of hands-on workshops invite visitors to try their hand at traditional and contemporary crafts, with activities ranging from fabric dyeing and leatherwork to kintsugi, botanical art, and miniature moss terrariums. The food area celebrates craftsmanship of another kind, bringing together artisan breads, handmade sweets, specialty coffee, and small-batch condiments from across Japan, including seasonal and event-exclusive treats. Elsewhere, the Music & Play area adds live performances and comedy to the festivities, while live painting offers a chance to watch artists transform blank canvases into original works before an audience. It’s an opportunity to experience Japanese creativity in action, rather than simply admire the finished products.

Whether you’re searching for a memorable Christmas present, hoping to discover a new creative passion, or simply curious about Japan’s thriving craft culture, HandMade In Japan Fes’ Osaka promises a weekend devoted to the pleasure of making—and discovering—something different.

The festival combines a large indoor marketplace with interactive workshops, seasonal shopping, food, and live entertainment.

  • Music, Comedy, and Live Art — The Music & Play area introduces live musical performances and comedy, while live painting gives visitors an opportunity to watch artists develop original works in real time.
  • Meet the People Behind the Work — One of HMJ’s defining experiences is the chance to speak directly with creators. Ask about their materials, techniques, inspiration, or how to care for a handmade purchase, and discover the stories behind individual pieces.
