Osaka Castle Illuminage
Osaka Castle Illuminage transforms Nishinomaru Garden into a glowing journey through the city’s history, with illuminated scenes unfolding beneath the castle keep from November through Valentine’s Day.

Few settings are as dramatic as Osaka Castle in winter, and from November 20, 2026 through February 14, 2027, Osaka Castle Illuminage transforms Nishinomaru Garden into a glowing winter landscape beneath the iconic castle. The event brings large-scale LED installations together in an enchanting, curated nighttime experience. Against the silhouette of the castle keep rising beyond the garden, visitors wander among towering light sculptures and immersive displays designed as a journey into the history that shaped Osaka itself.

For 2026–2027, Osaka Castle Illuminage presents SHOGUN: A Story in Lights, transforming the annual illumination into a historical journey through the age of the samurai and the story of Osaka Castle. This year’s Castle Edition draws on Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s ambition to unify Japan and the history that grew around Osaka Castle. Illuminated scenes use light to explore Japanese history, culture and aesthetics, turning a walk through Nishinomaru Garden into a glowing journey through the castle’s past.
Visitors follow the illuminated route through the garden, moving among large-scale displays with Osaka Castle appearing beyond the lights. Stop for photographs where the installations frame the keep, explore the displays from different angles, and look for the moments when the modern illumination overlaps with stone walls, garden paths and the historic castle landscape. Rather than simply placing winter lights beside Osaka Castle, Illuminage makes the setting itself part of the story.
There is plenty of time to wander. Nishinomaru Garden opens for Illuminage at 17:00, with the lights continuing until 21:30 and the venue remaining open until 22:00. Snack and drink stands inside the venue offer a chance to warm up and take a break between displays, while the long winter evening leaves plenty of time to revisit favorite scenes and enjoy the changing views of the castle.
Running from late November through Valentine’s Day, Osaka Castle Illuminage offers a very different way to experience one of the city’s defining landmarks. Come for the spectacle, but the strongest moments may be where old and new overlap—the glow of contemporary light art against stone walls, winter trees and a castle whose own history provides the story being told.
