Tigers are Back-to-Back Champions!

Hanshin Makes History with Consecutive Central League Titles

The Hanshin Tigers made franchise history with consecutive Central League championships in 2025 and 2026, celebrating another remarkable season at Koshien before their October postseason came to an end.

The Hanshin Tigers made history on October 3, 2026, securing back-to-back Central League championships for the first time in the franchise’s history under Japan’s two-league system. Hanshin took its eighth Central League pennant, completing a remarkable two-year run under manager Kyuji Fujikawa. For Tigers supporters across Kansai, it was another season worth celebrating — and another chapter in one of Japanese baseball’s most passionate sporting traditions.

Unlike the runaway championship campaign of 2025, this year’s pennant race demanded patience and resilience. Hanshin battled through a much tighter contest with the Yomiuri Giants, overcoming a difficult September stretch before securing the title. The Tigers finished with a 79–62–2 record, powered by a lineup featuring Teruaki Sato and Shota Morishita, dependable starting pitching, and contributions from an increasingly confident younger generation. Fujikawa, himself a legendary former Tigers closer, had delivered consecutive league titles in his first two seasons as manager.

The season also marked a farewell to veteran pitcher Yuki Nishi, who announced his retirement after an 18-year professional career. On October 7, Nishi made his final appearance at Koshien against the Hiroshima Carp before an emotional retirement ceremony. His final outing, a farewell address, and video tributes brought another memorable evening to the historic ballpark. For a player whose career had spanned nearly two decades, departing as a member of Hanshin’s first back-to-back championship team made the occasion especially meaningful.

But October brought disappointment. Entering the Central League Climax Series Final Stage with an automatic one-win advantage, Hanshin faced the Yokohama DeNA BayStars at Koshien from October 14–17, 2026. The Tigers were shut out in the first three games, losing 2–0, 1–0, and 4–0. Their offense finally came alive in Game 4, but DeNA prevailed 8–5 to complete a four-game sweep on the field and advance to the Japan Series. Hanshin’s hopes of adding a third national championship ended earlier than supporters had imagined.

Still, the Climax Series defeat could not erase what Hanshin had accomplished. Koshien Stadium, home to the Tigers since 1936, had witnessed another extraordinary year of baseball. From the coordinated chants and brass bands to the sea of yellow-and-black supporters filling its historic stands, the atmosphere reflected a fan culture that has endured across generations. Few sporting experiences capture Kansai’s collective spirit quite like a Tigers game at Koshien.

That atmosphere is what makes seeing Hanshin at Koshien more than simply watching a baseball game. The ritual begins long before the first pitch, as supporters arrive in team colors, gather around the ballpark and settle into a stadium where baseball is deeply woven into local identity. By the time the players take the field, the anticipation is unmistakable. And when the stakes rise in October, every pitch carries a little more weight.

For Osaka fans, Koshien is also remarkably accessible. The stadium is roughly 15–20 minutes from Osaka-Umeda by Hanshin Main Line, with Koshien Station immediately beside the ballpark. That makes a Tigers postseason game one of the easiest major championship sporting experiences to reach from central Osaka.

The 2026 season will be remembered for more than its disappointing final week. It was the year Hanshin proved its 2025 triumph was no one-season wonder, established a new franchise milestone, and celebrated the contributions of players whose careers helped shape the club. The Japan Series would have to wait, but the Tigers had already written their names into history. Back-to-back champions — and a season Kansai will remember.
