Minami Mido Bon Odori Celebrates 60 Years

On summer evenings in the heart of Osaka, the grounds of Minami Mido Temple transform into a giant dance circle. The 60th Minami Mido Bon Odori returns August 27–28, 2026, inviting visitors to join locals for two nights of traditional dancing, festival food and one of the city’s most unique summer gatherings.

Unlike neighborhood bon odori held in residential parks, Minami Mido Bon Odori takes place at a major temple directly along Midosuji, Osaka’s central boulevard. The temple grounds fill with lanterns, music and a large circular dance area where visitors can watch experienced dancers, follow along with the movements, or simply enjoy the atmosphere from the sidelines. Held under the roof of historic Minami Mido Temple, the festival offers a rare chance to experience traditional summer culture in the middle of modern Osaka.

The 2026 program brings together some of Japan’s traditional folk performers, including Hatsuneya Toyowaka, fifth-generation leader of the Hatsuneya Kawachi Ondo group, and folk singer Morihiro Sakazaki. Performances by the Japan Folk Song Association Headquarters and the Osaka City Japanese Folk Song Research Association add a wider national perspective, with music and dances drawn from Japan’s rich folk traditions. Special guest MCs Tatsuo Matsuda on August 27 and Yoshiki Matsuda on August 28 will guide the evening’s program.

Visitors can enjoy the classic summer festival atmosphere surrounding the dance. Food stalls line the temple grounds, while the first 300 visitors each day receive food-stall coupons and an uchiwa fan. For those who want to fully embrace the matsuri experience, yukata rental including footwear and dressing service is available by reservation for ¥3,800.

The story of Minami Mido Bon Odori goes deeper than summer entertainment. The roots of the tradition reach back to Osaka’s postwar rebuilding period, when communities were searching for ways to reconnect after the destruction of the war. The temple grounds became a place for people to gather, celebrate and look toward the future, eventually developing into the annual bon odori tradition that continues today.

Six decades later, Minami Mido Bon Odori remains a reminder that festivals are not only about performances and food — they are about bringing people together. Each summer, generations of Osaka residents return to the same temple grounds to dance, celebrate and continue a tradition built around community.
