Osaka Takes Its Comedy to the Streets

OSAKA COMEDY FESTIVAL Brings Internatinal Laughs to Namba

Physical comedy, visual gags, street performers and international acts fill Namba Plaza as OSAKA COMEDY FESTIVAL brings laughter beyond the language barrier, with free outdoor performances and non-verbal theater in the heart of Minami.

Osaka has never needed convincing that it’s a comedy city. OSAKA COMEDY FESTIVAL 2026 returns for year two with a different challenge: taking Osaka’s famous sense of humor beyond the language barrier.

For international visitors, that’s the hook. You don’t need to understand Japanese to get much of what’s happening. Physical comedy, visual gags, juggling, acrobatics and street performance fill Namba Plaza, while the ticketed shows at nearby SPACE14 in Shinsaibashi PARCO are also designed around comedy that can be understood through what you see rather than what you hear.

And the location feels deliberate. After debuting in Umeda in 2025, the festival heads south for its second edition — into Minami, the part of Osaka most closely associated with the city’s culture of laughter.

Namba Square becomes the public heart of the festival, with scheduled comedy shows and street performers taking over the square for three days, completely free to watch.

Among the headliners are performers who have already proved that Japanese comedy can travel: Tonikaku Akarui Yasumura, known internationally as TONY, reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent; physical comedian WES-P has appeared across the international Got Talent franchise; and visual-performance duo GABEZ reached a worldwide audience through their involvement in the pictogram performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic opening ceremony. Akira Ishida of NON STYLE also joins the Namba Square program. Together with Koikuchi Ichikawa, Yasumura and WES-P also perform as THE TOKYO IDIOTS, who appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2026.

NON STYLE’s Akira Ishida

They’re joined by a much larger roster of comedians and specialty performers from Osaka, Kansai and across Japan. NON STYLE’s Akira Ishida, one half of the duo that won Japan’s prestigious M-1 Grand Prix in 2008, appears both outdoors and as one of the creative forces behind the theater program.

That program continues at SPACE14. Ishida writes, directs and produces CHALLENGE, a one-hour non-verbal comedy incorporating physical performance and elements of traditional Japanese culture, including theatrical sword fighting. The following day, SKIT COMEDY SHOW brings multiple visually driven acts together in a variety-show format designed to cross the same language barrier.

There’s an international talent-search element as well. In the days before the festival, Cirque du Soleil Casting holds clown workshops and auditions followed by a circus-act audition in Osaka, extending the festival’s “From Osaka to the World” idea from established performers to new talent.

But you don’t need a theater ticket to experience OSAKA COMEDY FESTIVAL. Walk out of Namba Station during the three-day holiday weekend and the free performances are happening right in the plaza.  Food trucks featuring Osaka-grown and Osaka-produced ingredients will also operate around Namba Square throughout the three-day street program.

And if you’ve ever avoided Japanese comedy because you worried you wouldn’t understand it, this is the festival designed to remove that problem. Come knowing ten words of Japanese or ten thousand. The punchline here is meant to reach you either way.

Laugh Without Translation — Enjoy physical and visual comedy designed to cross the language barrier.

Comedy in the Plaza — Catch free comedy shows and street performers throughout the day in the heart of Namba.

International Credentials — See Japanese performers who have taken their comedy to Got Talent stages and audiences around the world.

Beyond the Street — Head to SPACE14 for ticketed non-verbal theater combining visual comedy with Japanese performance traditions

Minami Takes the Stage — Experience Osaka’s famous comedy culture right in the neighborhood most closely associated with the city’s laughs.

THE EXPERIENCE

OSAKA COMEDY FESTIVAL mixes the atmosphere of a free street festival with performances specifically chosen to make Osaka comedy more accessible across language barriers.

  • Catch established comedians alongside physical, circus and specialty performers in Namba Plaza.
  • See comedy built around movement, expressions, visual gags and physical performance rather than dialogue alone.
  • Move between scheduled stage shows and smaller street performances throughout the outdoor festival.
  • Discover performers whose visual comedy has already reached international audiences.
  • Head indoors to SPACE14 for longer, fully staged non-verbal productions.

The result is an unusually approachable introduction to Osaka’s comedy culture — including for visitors who speak little or no Japanese.

INFO & TIPS

The Namba Plaza program is scheduled to continue in light rain, but performances may be cancelled in severe weather. Check the official website or social media for changes if poor weather is forecast.

Food trucks at Namba Plaza will feature Osaka-produced foods, providing food and drinks between performances.

Photography and video recording are not permitted during the SPACE14 theater performances. Follow individual instructions for photography at outdoor performances.

The festival is preceded by a related Cirque du Soleil Casting program from October 7–9, including clown workshops and auditions and a circus-act audition. These are separate from the regular public festival programming.
