Katsuō-ji Autumn Light-Up

Autumn’s Fiery Reflections

When autumn leaves blaze red and golden, Katsuō-ji’s sacred grounds are bathed in soft evening light—an ethereal pilgrimage under a canopy of flame-colored foliage.

For well over a decade, the historic grounds of Katsuō-ji Temple—perched in the forested hills of Minoh—have burst into autumnal color and light. As dusk falls, the reds and golds that cloak the temple are gently illuminated, transforming pathways, pagodas, and daruma-lined corridors into something dreamlike. This autumn light-up, typically held from mid-November through early December, offers visitors a rare opportunity to step into what feels like a living painting, with every leaf glowing like a brushstroke.

Exploring Katsuō-ji after dark brings its spiritual depth into crisp focus. The temple is already famous for the thousands of red Kachi-Daruma that appear throughout its sprawling mountain grounds—lined across dedication shelves, gathered around temple buildings and tucked unexpectedly along pathways. For centuries, people have come here to pray for success, but “winning” at Katsuō-ji is less about defeating someone else than overcoming yourself: passing an exam, reaching a goal, succeeding in business or facing a personal challenge. The sea of red daruma visitors encounter today represents countless individual ambitions carried to the temple.

Visitors can become part of that tradition beneath the autumn canopy. Choose a Kachi-Daruma and make a commitment to a goal, then paint in one eye as a promise to work toward it. When that goal is achieved, the second eye is completed and the daruma can be returned to Katsuō-ji in gratitude. Smaller Daruma-Mikuji add another layer to the experience: after revealing their fortunes, visitors leave the tiny figures among the temple grounds, where their bright red faces gather beneath fiery maples and along leaf-strewn paths—one of Katsuō-ji’s most recognizable sights made even more striking in autumn.

From Ichigan Fudō, the view toward the Tahōtō pagoda framed by red and gold leaves is one of Katsuō-ji’s signature seasonal scenes. Illuminated under the fall foliage, the interplay of light, tradition, and nature becomes almost cinematic—a reminder that seasons, like fortunes, can shift, glow anew, and be reborn.

Illuminated Autumn Foliage – Watch temple halls and gardens transform into glowing landscapes after dark.

Daruma Everywhere – Find Katsuō-ji’s famous red daruma scattered along pathways, ponds and temple grounds.

Deeply Spiritual – Experience heritage architecture, mountain scenery and autumn color in a sacred setting.

Into the Hills – Escape central Osaka for Katsuō-ji’s forested setting in the mountains of Minoh.

Set Your Goal – Choose a Kachi-Daruma, make a personal commitment and paint one eye as you begin.

THE SCENE: FAQ’s

ACCESS

Katsuō-ji Temple
2914-1 Katsuōji, Minoh, Osaka 562-8508

Trains
Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line → Minoh-Kayano Station
From Minoh-Kayano, take the direct Hankyu Bus to Katsuō-ji. Regular daytime buses currently run every 10 minutes from 09:00 until 15:00, with additional services added according to demand.

Subways
Metro Midosuji Line → through service onto the Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line → Minoh-Kayano Station
Many Midosuji Line trains continue directly to Minoh-Kayano, making this the simplest route from central Osaka.

By Taxi
About 15 minutes from Minoh-Kayano Station, 20 minutes from Hankyu Minoh Station, or 12 minutes from Saito-Nishi Station.

◷ FROM CENTRAL OSAKA

From Namba — about 60–70 minutes
Take the Metro Midosuji Line / Kita-Osaka Kyuko through service to Minoh-Kayano, then the direct bus to Katsuō-ji.

From Osaka/Umeda — about 50–60 minutes
Take the Metro Midosuji Line from Umeda through to Minoh-Kayano, then the direct bus to Katsuō-ji.

It takes more effort than reaching a central Osaka temple, but that’s part of the experience: Katsuō-ji sits deep in Minoh’s forested hills rather than Osaka’s urban center.

Important for the light-up: the regular daytime bus timetable does not cover a full evening visit. Special evening transportation has operated for previous autumn light-ups, but the 2026 evening bus schedule has not yet been announced. Check the current return timetable before setting out.

SCHEDULE

Special Autumn Light-Up Days

Based on Katsuō-ji’s schedule in recent years, OSAKA SCENE expects the 2026 Autumn Light-Up to take place on selected Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from mid-November through early December.

If the recent pattern continues, the 2026 light-up period will likely fall between November 14 and December 6, including the November 21–23 holiday weekend.

Light-Up: Sunset–20:30
Temple Hours on Light-Up Days: 08:00–20:30

The exact 2026 Special Light-Up Days have not yet been published. OSAKA SCENE will update the schedule when the official dates are available.

Autumn Foliage

Katsuō-ji’s autumn colors generally reach their best from mid-November through early December. Current 2026 forecasts suggest a relatively late foliage season across Osaka, making late November into early December a particularly promising period for autumn color.

TICKETS

Admission

Adults / High school students and older — ¥500
Elementary / Junior high school students — ¥400
Preschool children — ¥100
Children age 2 and under — Free

The temple also offers Web Admission Tickets, allowing visitors to enter without waiting in the admission-ticket line. During the busy autumn foliage season, that’s genuinely useful rather than merely another purchasing option.

THE EXPERIENCE

Katsuō-ji combines one of Osaka’s most recognizable temple experiences with some of its most dramatic autumn scenery.

  • Walk beneath illuminated autumn foliage across the sprawling mountain temple grounds.
  • Find tiny red Daruma-Mikuji tucked along paths, buildings and stonework.
  • Choose a Kachi-Daruma, set a personal goal and take part in Katsuō-ji’s famous winning-daruma tradition.
  • Look toward the Tahōtō pagoda through brilliant red and gold leaves from Ichigan Fudō.
  • Explore the temple as daylight gives way to illumination and familiar scenery changes after dark.

Come for the autumn colors, but allow enough time to experience the daruma, temple buildings and mountain setting that make Katsuō-ji worth visiting throughout the year.

INFO & TIPS

Evening Transportation
This is the big one. Do not assume the regular daytime bus will get you back after the light-up. Katsuō-ji’s current regular direct service from Minoh-Kayano finishes well before the end of a light-up evening. The special 2026 evening timetable has not yet been announced, so check the temple and Hankyu Bus information before visiting.

Autumn Crowds
Autumn is a major visitation period. A Web Admission Ticket can eliminate the admission-ticket queue, and public transportation avoids the temple’s limited mountain parking capacity.

Driving
On Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and designated peak dates, private-car parking requires an advance reservation. Reservations can currently be made up to 14 days ahead. Parking is ¥1,000 for two hours. On ordinary weekdays, reservations are not required, but cars cannot wait for a space when the lot is full.

Motorcycles
Motorcycles and mopeds cannot use the prefectural road directly in front of Katsuō-ji; motorcycle traffic is prohibited there all day.

Accessibility
A priority barrier-free parking area is available. On dates when parking reservations are required, visitors needing the priority area should state the reason when reserving and speak with parking staff on arrival. The temple map also identifies accessible facilities around the grounds.

Give Yourself Time
Don’t plan this as a quick foliage photo stop. The grounds include the Sanmon, ponds, Kachi-Daruma dedication shelves, main hall, Ichigan Fudō and Tahōtō, and the light changes considerably as sunset approaches.
