Matcha at Osaka Castle’s Hidden Teahouse

A Rare Tea Ritual Inside Nishinomaru Garden

A normally closed teahouse inside Osaka Castle Park opens for a limited spring run, pairing matcha, wagashi, and garden views inspired by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s love of tea culture.

Beyond the crowds gathering around Osaka Castle’s main keeps and festival stages, another spring tradition unfolds at a slower pace inside Nishinomaru Garden. For a limited seasonal run, from April 2 – June 26, the normally closed teahouse “Hoshoan” (豊松庵) is opening to the public on Thursday and Fridays, offering visitors the chance to sit beneath the castle grounds with a bowl of matcha and traditional Japanese sweets while overlooking one of Osaka’s most scenic garden spaces.

The experience draws inspiration from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the powerful warlord closely associated with Osaka Castle and known for his deep appreciation of chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. Guests are invited to pause, reflect, and enjoy matcha while admiring the changing seasonal landscape — from late cherry blossoms in early spring to the greener, quieter atmosphere that settles across Nishinomaru Garden into June.

What makes the event especially appealing is the setting itself. Hoshoan is not normally open to the public, making this one of the few opportunities each year to enter the teahouse during regular daytime hours. Located inside Nishinomaru Garden, the space offers calm views across the grounds with Osaka Castle rising beyond the trees, creating a distinctly Osaka combination of history, nature, and ritual.

The tea set includes freshly prepared matcha paired with wagashi from long-established confectioner Tsuraya Hachiman, one of Osaka’s best-known traditional sweet makers. Rather than a formal tea ceremony, the atmosphere is approachable and relaxed, making it accessible even for visitors unfamiliar with tea culture. The result is less about ceremony and more about atmosphere — a quiet seasonal experience in the middle of the city.

Because the opening runs weekly through late June, the experience gradually changes with the season. Early April visitors arrive during peak cherry blossom viewing, while later dates shift into fresh greenery and calmer crowds. That seasonal transition gives repeat visitors a different mood depending on when they attend.

For visitors looking beyond Osaka’s larger tourist attractions, this is one of the city’s most understated spring experiences: a hidden teahouse, a bowl of matcha, and a rare chance to slow down inside one of Japan’s most famous castle parks.
