A Century-Old Façade Transformed by Light
A century-old architectural masterpiece bursts into color as dazzling projections, falling snow and Christmas magic transform Osaka’s historic waterfront into a world of light.

Osaka’s historic Central Public Hall becomes a canvas for large-scale projection mapping as contemporary light art transforms one of the city’s most celebrated architectural landmarks. Set against Nakanoshima’s illuminated waterfront, the spectacular outdoor show blends animation, color and architectural illusion, turning the Taishō-era building into a centerpiece of OSAKA Hikari Renaissance 2026.
Running December 11–25, the free nightly performances illuminate the building’s east-facing façade from 17:30 to 21:30. Each showing lasts approximately 10 minutes, repeating every 12 minutes, with the final performance beginning at 21:20. The frequent showings make it easy to catch the spectacle while exploring Nakanoshima’s winter festivities.
The 2026 production, themed “Osaka, Festival of Light”, brings a distinctly festive imagination to the historic building. Jewel-like windows shimmer across its exterior as falling snow and stars create a magical winter landscape. Santa Claus races across the night sky, while the architecture itself appears to shift and transform through a succession of luminous scenes.
The contrast between old and new is what makes the experience so compelling. Completed in 1918, Osaka Central Public Hall is celebrated for its red-brick exterior, grand arches and European-inspired architectural details. Projection mapping uses those distinctive forms as part of the visual composition, allowing the century-old building to become an active participant in the performance rather than simply a screen.
The projection mapping is one of the signature attractions of OSAKA Hikari Renaissance, which has brought seasonal light art to Nakanoshima since 2003. Visitors gather outside the Public Hall, surrounded by the district’s historic architecture, illuminated trees and waterways, to watch the building take on an entirely different character after dark.
Beyond the performance, Nakanoshima offers plenty more to explore. The nearby Riverside Hikari illuminationscontinue nightly through December 31, while Hikari Marche, seasonal concerts and Christmas Handmade Marchébring additional holiday experiences during the December festival period. Each has its own schedule and dedicated OSAKA SCENE coverage.
With its historic architecture, imaginative visual storytelling and festive waterfront setting, Central Public Hall Projection Mapping brings together two sides of Osaka: a city that treasures its past while continually finding new ways to bring it to life.
