Railway Model Festival Rolls into Umeda
Explore giant operating layouts, interactive exhibits, and beautifully crafted miniature worlds as Railway Model Festival 2026 returns to Osaka with special anniversary displays celebrating Kansai's railway heritage.
Japan’s railways have inspired far more than efficient transportation. They’ve inspired lifelong hobbies, remarkable craftsmanship, and generations of enthusiasts who recreate entire cities, landscapes, and railway lines in miniature. That passion takes center stage this summer as Railway Model Festival 2026 returns to Hankyu Umeda Main Store from July 29 through August 10, transforming the department store’s 9th Floor Event Hall into one of Osaka’s most distinctive indoor attractions.
Visitors can explore enormous operating layouts, beautifully crafted dioramas, railway simulators, and interactive family activities while discovering the artistry behind one of Japan’s favorite hobbies. Every display is filled with extraordinary detail, from busy commuter stations and countryside crossings to bridges, tunnels, and tiny neighborhoods brought to life by moving trains. Daily talk shows, workshops, and special programs offer even more opportunities to experience the creativity and engineering that have made Japanese railway modeling admired around the world.
The 2026 edition carries added significance as Hankyu Hanshin Holdings celebrates its 20th anniversary, while the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Hankyu Kobe Line’s elevated extension within Kobe City is commemorated through special exhibits and historical displays. Expanded Hankyu and Hanshin Railway exhibits give visitors a fascinating look at the companies that helped shape transportation and everyday life across Kansai, adding an extra layer of history to this year’s festival.
Now a long-running summer tradition in Umeda, Railway Model Festival continues to welcome families, photographers, hobbyists, and curious visitors with new exhibits and special programs each year. More than simply a model train exhibition, it celebrates the craftsmanship, innovation, and railway culture that have helped define modern Japan while inspiring new generations of railway enthusiasts.
Conveniently located in the heart of Umeda and comfortably indoors, Railway Model Festival is an ideal escape from Osaka’s summer heat and a perfect addition to a day of shopping, dining, or sightseeing. Whether you’re introducing children to the hobby, rediscovering childhood memories, or simply curious to see Japan in miniature, it’s one of those uniquely Japanese experiences that leaves visitors with a newfound appreciation for the trains that connect the nation.
