Osaka Rugby and Hanazono Heritage in Action

Experience professional rugby at legendary Hanazono Stadium as the Kintetsu Liners battle for promotion, bringing powerful tackles, passionate supporters and nearly a century of rugby tradition to the pitch.

Hanazono Kintetsu Liners logo

Professional rugby returns to Higashiosaka Hanazono Rugby Stadium on Saturday, January 9, 2027, as the Hanazono Kintetsu Liners face the Kawagoe Sayama Secom Rugguts in Japan Rugby League One Division 2. Following their December season-opening Osaka Derby against the Red Hurricanes, the Liners begin the next chapter of their home campaign against a determined opponent, with promotion ambitions and valuable league points at stake.

The Liners enter 2026–27 looking to build on a competitive previous season. They finished third in Division 2 in 2025–26, winning 10 of 14 matches but falling short of promotion. Their campaign included two dramatic victories over local rivals Red Hurricanes Osaka, winning 40–35 in January and 36–31 in April. Now, with another demanding schedule ahead, the challenge is to turn that competitive form into the consistency needed to return to Japan’s top division.

Few Japanese rugby clubs can claim a history quite like the Liners. Founded in 1929 as part of the Kintetsu railway organization, the team emerged from Japan’s longstanding tradition of company rugby, in which major corporations supported competitive teams and helped develop the sport. Nearly a century later, the Liners represent Higashiosaka in the professional League One era, carrying that heritage into a competition featuring ambitious clubs from across Japan. Their journey has included promotion to Division 1, relegation and the continuing pursuit of a return to the highest level.

Their home ground is an attraction in its own right. Higashiosaka Hanazono Rugby Stadium has long been associated with the National High School Rugby Tournament, an annual competition that has helped shape generations of Japanese players. For rugby followers, Hanazono holds a special place in the sport’s national culture. Its distinctive stands and dedicated rugby setting provide a different atmosphere from Osaka’s multipurpose arenas, placing spectators close to the physical contests and sweeping attacks unfolding across the pitch.

The modern Liners combine their Japanese rugby roots with international experience. Former Australian international Quade Cooper joins the 2026–27 coaching staff as attack coach, bringing a creative attacking perspective to a club seeking greater consistency. On the field, rugby’s combination of powerful forward play, rapid passing and tactical kicking creates a spectacle that can shift dramatically with a single breakaway run or hard-fought try.

For visitors, a Liners home game offers an opportunity to discover both professional Japanese rugby and the sporting identity of Higashiosaka. Hanazono is easily reached from central Osaka, making a match a rewarding afternoon excursion for longtime supporters and newcomers alike. Whether the occasion is a fiercely contested local derby or a crucial step in the promotion race, the Liners bring nearly 100 years of rugby tradition to every home fixture.

THE EXPERIENCE

A Hanazono Kintetsu Liners home game brings professional rugby to one of Japan’s most historic sporting venues. Whether you’re a longtime rugby supporter or watching your first match, Hanazono offers an exciting introduction to the speed, physicality and traditions of Japanese rugby.

  • A Stadium Built for Rugby – Unlike Osaka’s multipurpose arenas, Higashiosaka Hanazono Rugby Stadium is dedicated to rugby, with stands designed to give spectators clear views of the action. Its long association with Japan’s national high school championship makes it a landmark in Japanese sporting culture.
  • The Battle Up Front – Watch powerful forwards contest scrums, lineouts and breakdowns, where strength, technique and teamwork determine possession. These physical exchanges often set the stage for the match’s most exciting attacking moments.
  • Speed Across the Backline – Rugby’s attacking spectacle comes alive when quick passes, tactical kicks and sudden changes of direction create openings in the defense. A single line break can transform a tightly contested match into a spectacular try.
  • International Rugby Experience – The Liners combine Japanese talent with international rugby expertise. Former Australian international Quade Cooper joins the 2026–27 coaching staff as attack coach, bringing experience from the sport’s highest levels to the team’s attacking development.
  • A Club with Deep Local Roots – Founded in 1929 within the Kintetsu railway organization, the Liners carry nearly a century of rugby history. Their supporters represent a sporting tradition closely connected to Higashiosaka and the wider Kansai region.
  • The Race for Promotion – Competing in Japan Rugby League One Division 2, the Liners are pursuing a return to the top flight. Every league point matters, giving home matches significance beyond the final score, particularly against promotion rivals.

For visitors exploring Osaka’s sporting culture, Hanazono offers something different from a baseball game or an arena concert: a historic rugby ground, a proud hometown club and 80 minutes of fast-moving competition. With straightforward rail connections from central Osaka, a Liners match makes an excellent sporting excursion into Higashiosaka.

INFO & TIPS

Arrive Early
Allow time to enter the stadium, find your seats and explore the surroundings before kickoff. Security checks and entrance procedures may take longer for popular matches, particularly the Osaka Derby.

Weather & Clothing
Hanazono Rugby Stadium is an outdoor venue, and the League One season runs through winter and spring. Dress warmly for December–February matches, particularly if sitting in exposed sections. Bring rain protection when necessary, and check stadium rules regarding umbrellas.

Food & Drinks
Food and beverage arrangements may vary by match. Check the Liners’ official announcements for information about stadium concessions, food trucks and any matchday activities.

First-Time Rugby Spectators
A standard rugby union match consists of two 40-minute halves, plus stoppage time. Tries are worth five points, conversions two points, and penalty goals and drop goals three points each. Even without knowing every rule, visitors can enjoy the physical contests, quick passing and dramatic scoring opportunities.

Family Visits
Hanazono is located beside Hanazono Central Park, making the surrounding area a pleasant place to explore before or after a match. Families should check the official ticket information for student pricing and any age-related admission conditions.

Accessibility
Visitors requiring wheelchair seating or other accessibility assistance should review the stadium’s barrier-free facilities and contact the club before purchasing tickets to confirm suitable seating and entry arrangements.
