Christmas by Candlelight

Christmas Classics Glow in Osaka

Thousands of candles, a string quartet and a soundtrack stretching from Tchaikovsky to Tatsuro Yamashita bring a warm glow to Christmas in Osaka.

Christmas in Osaka usually announces itself rather loudly. Trees flash, shopping streets sparkle and illuminated buildings compete for attention across the city.  Candlelight turns the brightness down.

Thousands of tiny lights surround a string quartet as familiar Christmas melodies fill two of Osaka’s most atmospheric historic halls. On December 13, Candlelight: Christmas Classics comes to Mengyo Kaikan, before A Night of Christmas Classics moves into Ōtsuki Noh Theatre for Christmas Eve. The buildings could hardly be more different, but both offer the kind of intimate setting that makes a room full of candlelight feel especially appropriate.

The music wanders almost as widely. Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy sits alongside O Holy Night, Jingle Bells, White Christmas and Winter Wonderland. Then Christmas takes a distinctly Japanese turn with Mariya Takeuchi’s Sutekina Holiday, Yumi Matsutoya’s My Baby Santa Claus, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Tatsuro Yamashita’s practically unavoidable Christmas Eve. Even Wham! finds its way into the candlelight with Last Christmas. The program is performed by Chamber Music Atelier KOBE.

The first concerts take place December 13 inside Mengyo Kaikan, an Important Cultural Property completed in 1931 and regarded as one of Osaka’s notable examples of prewar modern architecture. Its elegant seventh-floor hall provides a particularly grand setting for performances at 15:00 and 17:15.

Then comes Christmas Eve.

At 17:00, the candles are lit inside Ōtsuki Noh Theatre for one final Christmas Classics performance. And for anyone who isn’t ready to go home afterward, there is an unusual encore waiting at 19:15: Candlelight’s The World of Joe Hisaishi takes over the same theatre. The concerts require separate tickets, but booking both creates a Christmas Eve double-header that moves from carols and Christmas pop to Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle without changing venues.

For an hour, Christmas comes down to four musicians, familiar melodies and several thousand points of warm light.

Christmas by Candlelight – Thousands of flickering lights surround a string quartet playing seasonal favorites.

East Meets West – Tchaikovsky and White Christmas share the program with Tatsuro Yamashita and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Historic Settings – Christmas Classics fills the elegant Mengyo Kaikan before moving to Ōtsuki Noh Theatre.

Christmas Eve Concert – Celebrate December 24 with an intimate 17:00 performance inside a traditional Noh theatre.

Make It a Double – Stay for the separately ticketed Joe Hisaishi Candlelight concert later on Christmas Eve.

THE EXPERIENCE

Christmas Classics trades Osaka’s giant outdoor illuminations for a quieter kind of seasonal glow.

  • Hear traditional carols and Christmas standards arranged for string quartet.
  • Move from Tchaikovsky and White Christmas to Japanese seasonal favorites.
  • Hear Christmas music by Tatsuro Yamashita, Mariya Takeuchi and Yumi Matsutoya.
  • Experience Candlelight inside two very different historic Osaka venues.
  • Choose Christmas Eve and add the separately ticketed Joe Hisaishi concert afterward.

The familiar music and thousands of flickering lights make this feel less like a Christmas attraction and more like an intimate seasonal concert.
