Volleyball puts speed, power and athleticism remarkably close to the crowd — and Osaka is home to one of Japan’s most successful clubs.
Suntory Sunbirds Osaka opens its 2026–27 season at Asue Arena Osaka on October 24–25, hosting Voreas Hokkaido at 13:05 both days. New captain and Japan middle blocker Taishi Onodera leads a Sunbirds side still built around setter Masahiro Sekita and powerful outside hitter Igor Kliuka, while Voreas arrives with a reshaped roster that includes 201cm Danish opposite Ulrik Dahl. This isn’t one of the league’s traditional Osaka rivalries, but it gives Sunbirds an immediate test against an ambitious Hokkaido club beginning its tenth-anniversary season.
The stakes come directly from last season. Sunbirds dominated the 2025–26 regular season at 40–4 and produced a club-record 29-match winning streak, only to lose the championship final to Osaka Bluteon. That makes the opening weekend the first step in a season explicitly built around reclaiming the SV.LEAGUE title under Onodera’s captaincy. Voreas, meanwhile, enters another season focused on pushing further up the league after last year’s campaign, making the two-match opener an early measure of both clubs’ ambitions.
Suntory’s volleyball story began in 1973, with the club reaching Japan’s top league just two years later. Its first V.League championship came in 1995, followed by a remarkable five consecutive titles from 2000–04. More recently, the Sunbirds won the 2023 Asian Club Championship, finished third at the Club World Championship that year, and became the first men’s champions of the new SV.LEAGUE in 2024–25.
Today the club represents Osaka City and Minoh, but doesn’t play in one permanent arena. Home matches rotate among venues around Osaka, including Asue Arena Osaka, Ookini Arena Maishima and Ohama Daishin Arena in Sakai, giving supporters several different ways to see the team during the season.
Volleyball also occupies an interesting place in Japanese sports culture. Generations encounter the game through school and university competition before reaching the professional level, making the sport familiar well beyond the SV.LEAGUE audience. At a professional match, that familiar game becomes considerably faster and more physical, with rallies unfolding only meters from the crowd.
For visitors, that’s part of the appeal. Indoor arenas keep the court, players and supporters close together, while organized cheering and the Sunbirds’ increasingly elaborate home-game presentation add the atmosphere of Japanese professional sport. You don’t need to understand every rotation to appreciate a huge spike, an impossible defensive save or an arena rising together at match point.

Ookini Arena Maishima

Nearest Station: Sakurajima Station — JR Yumesaki Line
Bus: From Sakurajima Station, take the Hokko Kanko Bus Maishima Active Bus toward Maishima and get off at Ookini Arena Maishima-mae.

This is the Sunbirds’ most frequently used Osaka home venue in 2026–27, so it will be the access block we use most often in the Info Box.

This is easily the most convenient Sunbirds venue from central Osaka and hosts the 2026–27 home opener as well as two January home weekends.

Sunbirds currently has one two-match home weekend here in February 2027, against Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers.
Access Tip: Don’t assume that because you attended a previous Sunbirds match you know where the next one is. The club moves between arenas throughout the season, and even consecutive home weekends can use different venues.

Tickets for Suntory Sunbirds Osaka home matches are sold through the club’s official Sunbirds Friends ticketing system. Prices vary by arena, seating area and match, with everything from upper-level seats to premium courtside options available.
General Sales: Individual match tickets are released in stages during the season.
Sunbirds Friends: Members receive priority purchasing periods before general sales.
Children: Discounted elementary and junior-high-school tickets are available in designated seating areas.
Same-Day Tickets: May be available when a match has not sold out, but advance purchase is recommended.

Popular matches — particularly Osaka derbies against Osaka Bluteon and Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers — can attract stronger demand, so buying early is recommended when those games go on sale.

THE EXPERIENCE
Sunbirds matches combine elite-level volleyball with the coordinated cheering, music and presentation of a Japanese professional sporting event. The relatively small court and indoor setting mean even upper-level spectators remain close to the action.

You don’t need to understand rotations or volleyball strategy before you go. The scoring is easy to follow, the rallies are immediate, and by the time a close set reaches 20 points, the tension in the arena pretty much explains itself.
INFO & TIPS
Sunbirds plays across several Osaka arenas, so check the venue for your specific match before traveling. Asue Arena Osaka, Ookini Arena Maishima and Ohama Daishin Arena have very different access routes.
SV.LEAGUE weekends commonly feature the same opponents on both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are sold separately for each match, so make sure you’re purchasing the correct date.
Doors open before the scheduled first serve, with exact opening times announced for each match. Arriving early is worthwhile for player warmups, arena activities, merchandise and pre-match presentation.
Food, merchandise and fan activities vary by arena and matchup. The club publishes individual home-game information before each series, so check the latest announcement even if you’ve attended a Sunbirds match before.
For Ookini Arena Maishima, allow extra travel time. Unlike Asue Arena, it isn’t directly beside a rail station and generally requires a bus connection for the final part of the journey.
The Sunbirds represents both Osaka City and Minoh, but its home schedule extends across the wider Osaka area. Don’t assume “home game” means the same arena from one weekend to the next.
The April matches against Osaka Bluteon at Maishima are Bluteon-hosted games, despite being played locally. Ticketing and game-day arrangements for those matches are therefore controlled by Osaka Bluteon rather than Sunbirds.
