Surrounded Inside a World of Art
The historic Central Hall of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts becomes the canvas for a vivid 360-degree world of light and music. Making its Japanese debut, the 30-minute experience surrounds visitors with projection mapping set to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.
Visitors to the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts are accustomed to looking at the art. This autumn, they’ll be sitting inside it.
From October 10-November 29, ENLIGHTENMENT JAPAN transforms the museum’s Central Hall into a 360-degree world of moving imagery, light and music. Walls, columns and the soaring ceiling of the historic 1936 building become projection surfaces as the internationally touring immersive production makes its first appearance in Japan.
And unusually for one of Osaka’s grandest museums, you can experience some of it from a beanbag. Chairs and a limited number of beanbags allow visitors to settle back and look upward as the projections move across the architecture and surround the audience. Photography and video are also permitted during the performance.
At the heart of the 30-minute experience is Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. The production unfolds through six chapters, beginning with Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter before moving into two more abstract final acts: Ignoranceand Enlightenment. The familiar cycle of the seasons gradually gives way to imagery exploring struggle, release and light.
The setting adds another dimension. The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1936, and the building is now a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property. Instead of simply displaying art within that architecture, ENLIGHTENMENT temporarily makes the architecture part of the artwork itself.
Five performances are scheduled each evening, beginning at 17:45 and continuing through 21:15 on performance days. The first announced season runs through November 29, while organizers have already confirmed that a second season will be announced later.
By day, the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts remains a place to stand before works of art.

JR Lines → Tennoji Station → Central Gate → approx. 400m northwest
From the Central Gate, head toward Tennoji Park and walk through the park toward the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. The museum is approximately 400 meters from the station.
Subways:
Metro Midosuji Line → Tennoji Station → West Gate → approx. 400m northwest
Metro Tanimachi Line → Tennoji Station → Exit 15 / 16 / 17 → approx. 400m northwest
For step-free access from the Tanimachi Line, use the South Gate and the elevator route at Exit 16.
Enter Tennoji Park and continue toward the museum. ENLIGHTENMENT JAPAN takes place in the 1F Central Hall.

The organizers note that the experience takes place in a darkened space and can include strong light and loud sound, which may be important when attending with young children.

INFO & TIPS
Beanbags are limited. Chairs are also available, so don’t count on securing a beanbag for every performance.
Photography and video are permitted during ENLIGHTENMENT. However, the museum’s general Central Hall rules prohibit tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and gimbals, so plan on handheld photography unless the event publishes a specific exception.
Tickets are electronic and tied to a specific performance. Do not arrive expecting to buy an ENLIGHTENMENT ticket from the museum ticket counter.
The museum has coin-return lockers on B2, B1 and 1F. Strollers may be used inside the museum, although stroller rentals are not available.
ENLIGHTENMENT was created by PROJEKTIL, a Zurich-based creative studio specializing in immersive experiences within historic architecture. The production has appeared in more than 90 cities and 100 historic buildings worldwide, with organizers reporting more than three million visitors before its Japanese debut in Osaka.
