Japan’s Castle Fans Gather in Osaka

A Comic-Con for Castle Lovers

Castle fans, photographers, samurai performers, and local mascots gather in Umeda for a weekend dedicated to Japan’s castle culture.

Japan’s castles have their own fandom. Enthusiasts travel the country collecting castle stamps, photographing keeps at sunrise, hiking to remote mountain fortresses, and debating the merits of stone walls, watchtowers, and reconstruction projects. Each summer, many of those fans gather in Osaka for a weekend dedicated entirely to castle culture.

Held August 8 and 9 at Grand Front Osaka, Osaka Castle Festival 2026 brings together castles, tourism organizations, preservation groups, photographers, historians, and enthusiasts from across Japan. Now in its fifth year, the event has grown into one of the country’s largest gatherings dedicated to castles and the communities that preserve them.

Fans and families alike will find plenty to enjoy throughout the weekend. Costumed performers, local mascots, interactive displays, workshops, and stage events make the festival approachable even for visitors with only a casual interest in history. Dedicated castle enthusiasts, meanwhile, can connect with preservation groups, tourism representatives, photographers, and fellow fans while discovering new destinations to add to their travel lists.

What makes Osaka Castle Festival unique is its blend of history, travel, and fandom. Visitors can explore exhibits from famous castles and lesser-known historic sites, attend talks and stage presentations, meet local mascot characters, and watch performances by samurai groups representing regions from around Japan. The result feels less like a tourism fair and more like a convention for people who share a passion for Japanese history.

Photography also plays a major role throughout the event. Award-winning images from the All Japan Castle Photography Contest will be displayed at the venue, showcasing castles in every season and from every corner of the country. Visitors can attend the contest’s award ceremony and commentary session, offering a glimpse into one of Japan’s most active castle photography communities.

Whether you’re planning your next castle-hunting road trip, looking for photography inspiration, or simply curious about Japan’s ongoing castle boom, Osaka Castle Festival offers a rare opportunity to experience dozens of castles and castle communities under one roof.

INFO & TIPS

Many visitors spend several hours exploring the exhibition floor, moving between castle exhibits, stage presentations, photography displays, and regional booths. The event rewards curiosity, and even casual visitors often discover castles, historic sites, and destinations they were not previously familiar with.

  • Arrive early if you plan to attend talks, stage presentations, or samurai performances.
  • Allow at least two to three hours to fully explore the exhibition floor.
  • Bring a camera or smartphone for mascot appearances, exhibits, and photo opportunities.
  • Castle photography enthusiasts should make time for the All Japan Castle Photography Contest exhibition.
  • Families may want to prioritize mascot appearances, workshops, and interactive activities.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as visitors will spend much of their time on their feet.
  • Grand Front Osaka offers numerous restaurants and cafés for breaks before or after your visit.
  • Review the official stage schedule before arriving if there are specific presentations or performers you wish to see.

Whether you’re planning future castle visits, looking for photography inspiration, or simply exploring a unique side of Japanese culture, Osaka Castle Festival is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace rather than as a quick stop between other activities.
