Banpaku Summer Festival transforms one of Osaka’s most iconic landmarks into a sprawling summer-night celebration. Every Weekend through September, Showa traditions and modern Osaka collide beneath the illuminated Tower of the Sun.
More than half a century after the Tower of the Sun became a symbol of Japan’s futuristic ambitions, the landmark is spending its summer nights looking both forward and back. This holiday weekend, August 8–10, 2026, Banpaku Summer Festival returns for three consecutive evenings of food, music, illuminations, and classic Japanese summer traditions. Across seven summer weekends through September 23, Banpaku Summer Festival 2026 transforms Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Suita into a sprawling evening celebration of food, music, light, and Japanese summer traditions.
Now in its fourth year, the festival embraces the theme “Reiwa Summer, Showa Summer,” bringing two very different eras together beneath one of Osaka’s most recognizable landmarks. Traditional bon odori, lanterns, ennichi games, festival food, and handheld fireworks share the night with contemporary illumination, DJs, international flavors, and modern entertainment.
At Festival Plaza, the Banpaku Night Market with Beer Garden becomes the social heart of the celebration. Visitors can settle in with beer, highballs, Japanese festival favorites, Asian dishes, and summer sweets before joining bon odori on selected nights, catching live entertainment, or switching eras entirely as DJs from Osaka’s Minami nightlife scene take over the music.
The setting makes that collision especially fitting. Artist Taro Okamoto’s Tower of the Sun was created for Expo ’70, the first World Expo held in Asia and one of the defining events of Showa-era Japan. During the festival, the Tower is illuminated after dark while nearby Dream Pond glows with light. A roughly 50-meter Path of Wind, lined with illuminated wind chimes, pinwheels, and streamers, adds the sounds and movement of a Japanese summer evening.
The nostalgia continues at the festival’s ennichi, where shooting galleries, super-ball scooping, and a giant Taiwanese ring toss recreate the simple pleasures of a neighborhood summer festival. Elsewhere, oversized lanterns illuminate the night and create some of the event’s most Instagram-worthy scenes.
Perhaps the most charming experience happens away from the main stage. At a designated fireworks area, visitors can bring or purchase handheld fireworks and spend part of the evening lighting sparklers beneath the summer sky—a familiar Japanese summer ritual that international visitors rarely have an opportunity to experience for themselves.
With 13 August nights to choose from, Banpaku Summer Festival is less a single event than a recurring summer destination. Come early to explore Expo ’70 Commemorative Park and the Tower of the Sun, then stay as daylight fades and one of Osaka’s great Showa landmarks becomes the backdrop for a distinctly Reiwa summer night.

Evening Access
After 4:30 PM, the East Gate and West Gate cannot be used for entry. Festival visitors should enter through the Central Gate or Japanese Garden Front Gate.
Last admission to the park is 9:30 PM.

During the festival’s extended evening hours, use the Central Parking Lot or Japanese Garden Front Parking Lot.
Last vehicle entry is 9:30 PM, and the parking lots close at 10:30 PM.

Illuminight Banpaku and the Handheld Fireworks Plaza operate as usual. The regular Banpaku Night Market with Beer Garden is replaced by Mangeki Summer Festival 2026.

Banpaku Summer Festival covers several areas of Expo ’70 Commemorative Park, so arrive early and allow time to explore. The festival continues until 10:00 PM, but some daytime attractions—including the Tower of the Sun interior—close earlier.
- After 4:30 PM, enter through the Central Gate or Japanese Garden Front Gate; the East and West gates are closed for entry.
- Bon odori, DJ sets, and live entertainment vary by date. Check the official schedule before visiting.
- Reserved Night Market seating is available by advance reservation and sold out on several nights in 2025.
- Visitors may bring their own handheld fireworks and bucket or purchase fireworks at the festival.
