Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival 2026

Osaka's Biggest Summer Blast!

Osaka’s beloved Yodogawa Fireworks Festival is back in August 2026, lighting up the city’s night sky with its biggest summer spectacle.

Every August, the banks of the Yodo River in Osaka transform into a living festival ground, alive with food stalls, yukata-clad families, and the excited chatter of hundreds of thousands of spectators. The occasion? The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival — Osaka’s biggest fireworks event, and one of the largest in all of Japan.

Founded in 1989, the Yodogawa fireworks were created not just as entertainment but as a community celebration, organized by local volunteers and businesses to bring life and pride back to the riverfront. Over the decades it has grown into a defining Osaka event, now attracting nearly 500,000 people each year.

The spectacle is staggering: more than 20,000 fireworks shells launched over the river in a carefully choreographed show lasting about an hour. The displays are known for their creative designs — from massive starbursts that seem to engulf the sky to playful themed fireworks that draw delighted gasps. Unlike some rural fireworks festivals, Yodogawa’s urban setting gives it a unique energy, with Osaka’s skyline as the backdrop and the roar of the crowd echoing down the river.

In 2025, the Yodogawa fireworks made history by being held in October instead of their usual early August timing, in coordination with Expo 2025. That rare autumn edition treated visitors to crisp night skies and extended Osaka’s season of celebration, proving the festival’s ability to adapt while still delivering its trademark spectacle.

Looking ahead, the festival is expected to return to its traditional early August slot in 2026, following the one-off October schedule. While the exact date will be announced closer to summer, the event almost always takes place on the first Saturday of August. Mark your calendar, and be ready to join the throngs who gather to witness the biggest fireworks show in Osaka.

Osaka’s biggest fireworks festival: ~500,000 spectators, ~20,000 shells.

Atmosphere: Yukata, matsuri food stalls, family picnics — pure Osaka summer spirit.
2026 outlook: Expected return to early August, most likely Saturday, August 1, 2026 (TBC).
Regional context: Bigger than any other display in Osaka city
