Suikoden. 108 Rebels. One Legendary Story.

After more than 600 years of reinvention, Water Margin continues to surface in novels, manga, movies, television dramas and games—meaning some visitors may recognize the Japanese name Suikoden long before realizing that it belongs to a centuries-old Chinese story. From July 11 through September 6, Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts in Tennoji brings those connections back to their source, revealing just how deeply the tale of the 108 heroes has embedded itself in Japanese popular culture.

Long before superheroes assembled into teams, 108 rebels gathered at Liangshan Marsh. Their battles against corruption, loyalty to one another, and larger-than-life adventures became Water Margin (Suikoden), one of China’s great classical novels—and eventually a cultural phenomenon in Japan.

The story began with tales surrounding the historical outlaw Song Jiang and his companions, whose exploits grew into legend before becoming the sprawling narrative known today. When Water Margin reached Edo-period Japan, Japanese artists didn’t simply translate it. They reinvented it. Writers including Kyokutei Bakin adapted its storytelling, while Katsushika Hokusai gave its heroes a new visual identity through his illustrations.

Then came Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Beginning around 1827, his dynamic One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Popular Water Margin turned tattooed warriors, dramatic combat, fantastic creatures, and explosive action into spectacular ukiyo-e. The series became Kuniyoshi’s breakthrough—and this exhibition brings together all 74 designs, offering a rare opportunity to experience the celebrated series together in one place.

But the exhibition reaches much further than ukiyo-e. Chinese artworks evoke the world from which the story emerged, while later Japanese interpretations reveal how the legend continued to evolve. The journey eventually reaches manga, including original artwork from Takao Saito’s Suikoden, demonstrating how the same rebellious heroes could leap from classical literature into the visual language of modern Japan.

The story is still being reinvented in 2026. Costumes worn by Song Jiang, Chao Gai and Lin Chong in the new television drama Kitakata Kenzo Suikoden are displayed alongside author Kenzo Kitakata’s handwritten manuscript. Actor Kazuya Kamenashi, who plays Lin Chong in the drama, also narrates the exhibition’s audio guide, bringing a legend born centuries ago firmly into the present.

From ancient Chinese treasures to Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, manga and contemporary television, Water Margin isn’t simply the story of 108 rebels. It’s the story of what happened when one unforgettable tale crossed borders, centuries and artistic forms—and refused to disappear.
