This summer, a rare seasonal opening offers the chance to step inside one of the fortress's original 17th-century turrets and discover a side of Osaka Castle few people ever see.
Most visitors experience Osaka Castle from its famous main keep, museum galleries, and sweeping parkland. On August 8–9 and 15–16, 2026, however, visitors have a rare opportunity to step beyond the usual sightseeing route and explore one of the castle’s original defensive structures. Osaka Castle’s seasonal YAGURA Special Opening Program rotates between several historic turrets throughout the year. This summer, the spotlight falls on the Inui Yagura (Northwest Turret), normally closed to the public, offering visitors a fascinating look inside a part of the fortress that few people ever experience.
To understand why these buildings matter, it helps to understand the castle itself. Toyotomi Hideyoshi completed the original Osaka Castle in the late 16th century, but much of that fortress was destroyed during the Siege of Osaka (1614–1615), the decisive conflict that ended the Toyotomi clan and established Tokugawa rule over Japan. Beginning in 1620, the Tokugawa shogunate rebuilt Osaka Castle on an even grander scale, constructing new stone walls, moats, gates, and a network of defensive yagura that still define the castle today. The surviving Inui Yagura, Tamon Yagura, and Sengan Yagura are among the few original buildings from that reconstruction to remain standing nearly 400 years later.
This summer’s opening focuses on the Inui Yagura, a two-story wooden watchtower that guarded the castle’s western approaches. Designated an Important Cultural Property, it preserves massive timber beams, original stone foundations, defensive gun and arrow openings, and architectural details that visitors rarely have the chance to experience from the inside.
The special opening fits naturally into a full day at Osaka Castle. Along with visiting the reconstructed main keep, museum exhibits, and expansive castle park, visitors can also explore Nishinomaru Garden, included with turret admission, where broad lawns frame one of Osaka’s most iconic castle views. Nearby, the Toyotomi Stone Wall Museum reveals the massive buried stone walls from Hideyoshi’s original castle, adding another layer to the story of one of Japan’s most important historic landmarks. Together, they create one of Osaka’s most rewarding cultural day trips.
