Van Gogh Comes to Osaka

Art masterpieces arrive at Abeno Harukas.

See paintings by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Manet as one of Europe’s finest art collections makes a rare stop in Osaka for a limited summer exhibition.

This summer, one of Europe’s finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art arrives in Osaka. Through September 9, 2026, Van Gogh’s Drawbridge and the Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum brings approximately 70 paintings from Cologne, Germany, to the Abeno Harukas Art Museum, offering visitors the rare opportunity to experience works by some of history’s greatest artists without leaving Japan.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir, Sewing, 1898

Named for Vincent van Gogh’s The Drawbridge (1888), the exhibition features masterpieces by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet, and other pioneers of European painting. Drawn from the celebrated Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud, the collection traces the remarkable evolution of Impressionism and the artistic movements that transformed Western art during the nineteenth century.

Paul Cézanne, Still Life with Pears, c. 1885

The exhibition is especially significant because these masterpieces are touring Japan while the Wallraf-Richartz Museum undergoes a major renovation in Germany. Osaka is one of only a handful of Japanese cities hosting the exhibition, giving visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of Europe’s great museum collections outside its permanent home.

Inside the elegant galleries of the Abeno Harukas Art Museum, thoughtfully curated displays guide visitors through more than a century of artistic innovation, balancing internationally recognized masterpieces with lesser-known works that reveal the depth of the collection. Whether you’re a lifelong art lover or simply curious to see a Van Gogh in person, the exhibition offers an approachable and rewarding introduction to European art.

Its location also makes it easy to turn an afternoon at the museum into a full day exploring southern Osaka. After viewing the exhibition, ride the elevator to Harukas 300 for sweeping city views, stroll through Tennoji Park, visit the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, or wander the nostalgic streets of nearby Shinsekai. Few cultural attractions in Osaka are so easily paired with a complete day of sightseeing.

More than an art exhibition, this is an opportunity to stand before paintings that helped redefine the history of Western art. For a limited time, one of Europe’s most celebrated museum collections has found a temporary home in Osaka, making this one of the city’s must-see cultural experiences of the summer.
