Osaka’s River of Stars
For one magical evening each July, Osaka’s waterways become a living Milky Way as thousands of glowing Wish Stars drift beneath the city’s skyline in celebration of Tanabata.
There are few moments in Osaka that feel as magical as watching thousands of glowing blue lights drift silently down the Okawa River. For one evening each summer on July 7, the city celebrates Tanabata by transforming its waterways into a shimmering Milky Way, as approximately 40,000 illuminated Inori-boshi (“Wish Stars”) are released onto the water by thousands of participants.
Now in its sixteenth year, OSAKA Amanogawa Densetsu has become one of the city’s most distinctive summer traditions. Inspired by the ancient Tanabata legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi—the star-crossed lovers separated by the Milky Way—the event invites visitors not simply to watch, but to become part of the story. Guests who purchase a participation ticket receive an Inori-boshi, make a wish, and release the glowing sphere into the river, where thousands of others gradually create an extraordinary ribbon of blue light flowing through the heart of Osaka.
The choice of location is no accident. The Okawa River has long been central to Osaka’s identity as Japan’s “Water Capital,” and the event celebrates that connection by bringing Tanabata to one of the city’s most iconic waterways. Each summer, the organizers transform the river into a living Milky Way, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and share in a uniquely Osaka tradition that blends folklore, community, and the city’s enduring relationship with the water.
The scale of the event is remarkable. Approximately 48,500 visitors gathered along the river in 2025, while around 40,000 Inori-boshi illuminated the Okawa in one of Kansai’s most photogenic summer spectacles. While many visitors choose to enjoy the view from the riverside promenades and bridges, ticket holders have the rare opportunity to step into designated release areas and become part of the glowing river themselves. After the event, every Inori-boshi is carefully collected, recharged, and reused, ensuring the tradition remains as sustainable as it is beautiful.
As dusk settles over Osaka and the first blue lights begin to float downstream. Soon the river becomes a luminous ribbon winding beneath bridges and between the city’s skyline, carrying thousands of hopes gently toward the sea. For a few unforgettable hours, Osaka doesn’t simply celebrate Tanabata—it recreates the Milky Way itself.
