The Osaka Derby Returns
The city splits blue and pink. Osaka’s fiercest football rivalry returns this April as Gamba Osaka host Cerezo Osaka in the latest edition of the Osaka Derby. Expect a packed stadium, roaring supporter sections, and ninety minutes that will divide the city.
Few matches in Japanese football carry the emotional weight of the Osaka Derby, and this April 11th the rivalry returns to northern Osaka as Gamba Osaka host city rivals Cerezo Osaka at Panasonic Stadium Suita.
Derby matches are among the most anticipated fixtures in the J1 League calendar. The two clubs represent different sides of the city and bring distinctly different supporter cultures. Gamba’s blue‑and‑black faithful fill the stands with drums and chants, while Cerezo’s pink‑clad supporters travel across Osaka determined to claim bragging rights.
The match arrives with early-season positioning already taking shape. Cerezo Osaka sit above Gamba Osaka in the table after a more stable start, while Gamba remain in the lower half following inconsistent results. That shifts the pressure toward Gamba — a derby win here would reset their trajectory and close the gap, while Cerezo have the chance to extend their advantage and reinforce their early momentum. Much of Gamba’s attack runs through Takashi Usami, while Cerezo look to Lucas Fernandes to control tempo and create chances.
Gamba Osaka finished the 2025 J1 League season in ninth place and will be looking to push back toward the league’s top tier this year.
Much of the attacking creativity will flow through veteran forward Takashi Usami, one of the club’s most recognizable players and a longtime symbol of Gamba’s youth academy success. Across the pitch, Cerezo Osaka bring their own stars — including Shinji Kagawa — ensuring the derby always features experienced talent.
The Rise of Gamba Osaka
Founded in 1980 as the corporate team of Panasonic, Gamba Osaka became a founding member of the J.League when professional football launched in Japan in 1993. The club’s name blends the Italian word ‘gamba’ (leg) with the Japanese spirit of ‘ganbaru’ — perseverance and effort.
Gamba quickly established themselves as one of Japan’s most exciting attacking teams, winning the J1 League title in 2005 and the AFC Champions League in 2008. Legendary midfielder Yasuhito Endo defined the club’s golden era, while modern stars like Takashi Usami continue to represent the club’s youth development tradition.
Panasonic Stadium Suita
Celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year, Panasonic Stadium Suita, built in 2016, is widely considered one of the best football venues in Japan. Built specifically for soccer, the stadium places supporters close to the pitch, creating one of the most intense atmospheres in the J.League.
Located beside Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Suita City, the 39,000‑seat stadium fills with blue‑and‑black jerseys on matchdays as fans gather hours before kickoff. When the chants begin and the drums echo through the stands, the venue becomes one of the loudest sporting environments in Kansai.
