Expo ’70 Park Cherry Blossoms

Sakura Beneath the Tower of the Sun

With approximately 5,500 cherry trees across vast open lawns, Expo ’70 Park is one of Kansai’s largest and most visually dramatic sakura destinations. These trees beautifully frame the iconic Tower of the Sun, creating a breathtaking scene.

North of central Osaka in Suita, Expo ’70 Commemorative Park transforms each spring into one of the Kansai region’s largest and most visually dramatic sakura destinations. Approximately 5,500 cherry trees bloom across the vast grounds, framing lawns, pathways, and the park’s unmistakable landmark — the towering sculpture known as the Tower of the Sun.

Unlike Osaka Castle’s historic stone backdrop or Kema Sakuranomiya Park’s riverside immersion, Expo ’70 offers space. The Natural and Cultural Gardens provide wide-open viewing areas where visitors can spread blankets beneath long rows of Somei-yoshino trees. Higashioji Street becomes a pink corridor during peak bloom, and the scale of the park allows crowds to disperse more comfortably than in tighter city locations.

According to the latest 2026 projection from the Japan Meteorological Corporation, released March 19, flowering in Osaka was expected around March 24, with first blooms arriving right on schedule, and full bloom projected for March 31. (See the Sakura Forecast Map below.)

Expo ’70 Commemorative Park has now officially confirmed its 2026 Sakura Festival (さくら祭 / Cherry Blossom Festival), running from March 20 through April 5. During this period, the park evolves from a daytime hanami destination into a more layered seasonal experience, with extended evening hours and designated illumination nights scheduled during the festival period, allowing visitors to experience the blossoms after sunset.

A designated Sakura Food Court will also operate within the park from March 26 through April 5, bringing together dozens of vendors serving festival classics, regional specialties, and desserts in an open-air setting. The addition of food, lighting, and extended hours shifts the park beyond traditional viewing into a full-day — and evening — spring destination. For a detailed breakdown of vendors and food offerings, see our dedicated Sakura Food Court guide.

As an added bonus, Expo ’70 Park sits beside EXPOCITY, a modern entertainment complex that includes the Redhorse Osaka Wheel — one of Japan’s tallest ferris wheels — and the large shopping and dining complex LaLaport EXPOCITY. It’s easy to pair sakura viewing with shopping, dining, or a panoramic ride overlooking blooming treetops.

For visitors seeking a full-day spring outing — lawns, skyline views, and open-air scale — Expo ’70 Park delivers one of Osaka’s most expansive and rewarding hanami experiences.

SCHEDULE

Cherry blossoms at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park typically bloom from mid-March through early April. For 2026, early projections from the Japan Meteorological Corporation suggest flowering around March 24–26, with full bloom expected between March 30 and April 2.

Regular Park Hours:

9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Last entry 4:30 PM)

Sakura viewing during daytime hours does not require a special ticket beyond standard park admission.

In 2025, the park formally designated a Cherry Blossom Festival period from March 20 through April 6, during which extended evening hours were offered on select nights. Illumination operated until approximately 9:00 PM (last entry around 8:30 PM) on those designated evenings.

As of publication, official 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival dates and illumination hours have not yet been announced. Based on recent precedent, a late-March through early-April schedule would be consistent, though visitors should confirm on the official Expo ’70 Park website as peak bloom approaches.
