Osaka Summer Begins at Aizen Matsuri

Ask many Osaka residents when summer truly begins, and the answer is not necessarily found on the calendar. For generations, the arrival of Aizen Matsuri has marked the traditional beginning of Osaka’s summer festival season. Held at Aizendo Shoman-in Temple in Tennoji June 20-July 2, the three-day celebration blends Buddhist tradition, local culture, lively street atmosphere, and one of the city’s most recognizable processions into an event that continues to draw visitors from across the Kansai region.

The festival centers on Aizen Myo-o, the principal deity of the temple and a figure associated with love, matchmaking, marriage, and harmonious relationships. During Aizen Matsuri, visitors have a rare opportunity to view the normally hidden image of Aizen Myo-o, making the festival both a public celebration and an important religious occasion. The temple’s historic Tahoto Pagoda, designated as an Important Cultural Property, is also specially opened to the public during the festival period.

The most famous event takes place on June 30 with the Hoekago Procession. Eight women selected as the 2026 Aizen Musume travel from Tennoji Park’s Tenshiba area to Aizendo Shoman-in in decorated palanquins, accompanied by crowds of spectators and photographers. Upon arriving at the temple, they participate in the traditional Kago-Age ceremony, creating one of the festival’s defining moments and most recognizable images.

While the procession receives much of the attention, Aizen Matsuri continues throughout the day and into the evening. Food stalls line the area around the temple, drawing visitors with festival favorites and creating a lively atmosphere around the grounds. Traditional Sesshu Danjiri Bayashi music and Suzume Odori dance performances are scheduled as part of the festival program, adding sound and movement to the celebrations beyond the headline events.

A major religious highlight takes place on June 30 with the Nagoshi-no-Harae Grand Buddhist Service. The ceremony brings together priests including the chief priest of Shitennoji Temple and serves as a symbolic purification before entering the second half of the year. For many visitors, it offers an opportunity to experience the spiritual foundation that has sustained the festival for generations.
