ART OSAKA 2026

Where contemporary art reshapes the city

ART OSAKA returns in 2026 with a new city-center venue at Grand Green Osaka and large-scale installations in Kitakagaya, bringing over 500 works and 60+ galleries into one of Japan’s most dynamic contemporary art events.

ART OSAKA enters a new phase in 2026, expanding across two distinct venues that reflect the city’s evolving cultural landscape. From May 28 through June 1, the fair unfolds between the newly developed Grand Green Osaka in Umekita and the industrial creative zone of Kitakagaya, presenting a wide-ranging view of contemporary art in Japan and beyond.

The Galleries Section takes place at Congrès Square Grand Green Osaka from May 29 to May 31, with a preview opening on May 29. Located in the heart of Umekita—directly connected to JR Osaka Station—the venue places contemporary art within one of Japan’s most ambitious urban redevelopment projects. Here, 52 galleries from Japan and abroad present more than 500 works across painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed media.

This move to Grand Green Osaka signals a shift toward greater visibility and accessibility. Surrounded by commercial, cultural, and public space, the fair becomes part of a broader urban flow, encouraging visitors to encounter art alongside the architecture and energy of Osaka’s newest district.

In contrast, the Expanded Section in Kitakagaya runs from May 28 to June 1 at Creative Center Osaka, a vast former shipyard warehouse. The scale of the site allows for large installations and experimental works that exceed the framework of conventional art fairs, creating a dramatically different viewing experience. Rather than booth-based displays, artworks unfold across open industrial space, often interacting directly with the structure itself.

Kitakagaya’s identity is central to this experience. Once an active industrial zone, the area now functions as one of Osaka’s most important creative districts. The tension between its industrial past and contemporary artistic practice creates an environment where the setting is as much a part of the exhibition as the work itself.

Across both venues, ART OSAKA presents a wide range of media, from painting and sculpture to video, craft, and installation, with works spanning price points from accessible entry-level pieces to high-value collector works. This range reflects the fair’s dual role as both a public-facing exhibition and a marketplace for contemporary art.

Founded in 2002, ART OSAKA remains Japan’s longest-running contemporary art fair. In 2026, with 65 galleries participating across both sections, it continues to evolve—balancing accessibility in the city center with experimentation at the edges of the urban landscape.

Two Venues, Two Experiences – Polished gallery presentations in Umekita contrast with industrial-scale installations in Kitakagaya.

500+ Works On View – A dense snapshot of contemporary art across multiple media.

65 Participating Galleries – A curated mix of domestic and international representation.

Kitakagaya Edge – Large-scale works inside a former shipyard redefine the exhibition experience.

City Meets Art – Grand Green Osaka places the fair at the center of the city’s newest district.
