HiGH&LOW Brings the Franchise to Osaka’s Stage
Part action spectacle, part historical fantasy, part multimedia franchise phenomenon, HiGH&LOW THE Sengoku Gaiden arrives in Osaka this summer as the long-running HiGH&LOW universe expands once again beyond film and television into large-scale theatrical performance.
Over the past decade, the HiGH&LOW franchise has grown from a television drama into one of Japan’s most recognizable multimedia action universes. What began in 2015 with HiGH&LOW: The Story of S.W.O.R.D. quickly expanded into films, live performances, music projects, manga, games, and large-scale entertainment collaborations tied closely to the world of LDH and EXILE TRIBE culture. This summer, that evolving franchise returns to Osaka in a new form with HiGH&LOW THE Sengoku Gaiden, onstage August 7-9, 2026 at Umeda Arts Theater.
Rather than revisiting the modern gang conflicts of the original screen productions, HiGH&LOW THE Sengoku Gaidenre imagines the franchise inside a stylized Sengoku-era fantasy world filled with thieves, rival factions, pirates, hidden religious groups, and legendary dragon relics. The story follows Murakumo Hayato, a former thief tied to the Suwa volunteer army, who sets out alongside his sister Kikyo and partner Kai in pursuit of one of nine mythical treasures said to contain the sealed power of dragons.
The production continues the theatrical direction established by the earlier HiGH&LOW THE Sengoku stage project, which drew attention for combining LDH entertainment culture with large-scale Japanese theater production and performers connected to Takarazuka Revue. This new side story expands that world further while preserving the franchise’s signature mix of stylized combat, cinematic visual design, music-driven energy, and larger-than-life faction rivalries.
One particularly notable appearance is Yuto Ozawa, an LDH-affiliated actor and member of 劇団EXILE who also appeared within the wider HiGH&LOW screen universe. His involvement creates a direct connective thread back to the franchise’s film and television identity, reinforcing that this is not simply a loosely inspired adaptation, but an officially connected extension of the broader HiGH&LOW world.
The Osaka run features five total performances across three days at Umeda Arts Theater Main Hall. While two performances are designated as private performances for specific sponsors or groups, multiple standard public performances remain available for general audiences. Select performances are also officially designated as curtain-call photo-op shows, allowing audiences to take still photographs during approved moments after the performance when staff display “photo OK” signs — an unusual policy for Japanese theater productions and another reflection of the franchise’s strong fan-community culture.
For longtime fans, HiGH&LOW THE Sengoku Gaiden represents another evolution of a franchise that has continually reinvented itself across different entertainment formats. For newcomers, it offers a glimpse into one of Japan’s most ambitious attempts to merge action cinema, idol culture, live performance, theatrical spectacle, and fandom-driven worldbuilding into a single evolving entertainment universe.
