Expo ’70 Park Cherry Blossoms
With approximately 5,500 cherry trees across vast open lawns, Expo ’70 Park is one of Kansai’s largest and most visually dramatic sakura destinations. These trees beautifully frame the iconic Tower of the Sun, creating a breathtaking scene.
North of central Osaka in Suita, Expo ’70 Commemorative Park transforms each spring into one of the Kansai region’s largest and most visually dramatic sakura destinations. Approximately 5,500 cherry trees bloom across the vast grounds, framing lawns, pathways, and the park’s unmistakable landmark — the towering sculpture known as the Tower of the Sun.
Unlike Osaka Castle’s historic stone backdrop or Kema Sakuranomiya’s riverside immersion, Expo ’70 offers space. The Natural and Cultural Gardens provide wide-open viewing areas where visitors can spread blankets beneath long rows of Somei-yoshino trees. Higashioji Street becomes a pink corridor during peak bloom, and the scale of the park means crowds disperse more comfortably than in tighter city locations.
According to the latest 2026 projections from the Japan Meteorological Corporation, flowering in Osaka is expected around March 23, with full bloom projected March 31st. (See the Sakura Forecast Map below)
In recent seasons, Expo ’70 Commemorative Park has formally designated a “Cherry Blossom Festival” (さくら祭) period during peak bloom. In 2025, the festival ran from March 20 through April 6 and included extended evening hours on select days, with illuminated sections of the park allowing visitors to enjoy blossoms after sunset. Temporary food vendors and seasonal concessions also appeared during peak weekends, creating a relaxed festival atmosphere across the Natural and Cultural Gardens.
As of publication, official 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival dates and illumination details have not yet been announced by the park. Based on recent years, a late-March through early-April schedule would be consistent, though visitors should check the official Expo ’70 Park website for confirmation as peak bloom approaches.
As an added bonus, Expo ’70 Park sits beside EXPOCITY, a modern entertainment complex that includes the Redhorse Osaka Wheel — one of Japan’s tallest ferris wheels — and the large shopping and dining complex LaLaport EXPOCITY. It’s easy to pair sakura viewing with shopping, dining, or a panoramic ride overlooking blooming treetops.
For visitors seeking a full-day spring outing — lawns, skyline rides, and open-air scale — Expo ’70 Park delivers one of Osaka’s most expansive hanami experiences.
