The Osaka Museum of Housing and Living blends physical immersion with cutting-edge XR technology, creating one of Osaka’s
most unique cultural experiences.  Through an entire exhibit floor, you step directly into the late-Edo era: lantern-lit alleyways, wooden
shops, merchant homes, a public bathhouse, and an atmospheric street scene recreated at full scale. The lighting subtly
shifts from day to dusk, ambient sounds drift through the streets, and the smell of tatami and cedar completes the effect.
Visitors often describe it as “walking into a period drama set,” except here everything is historically accurate.

The journey continues through Meiji, Taisho, and Showa-era Osaka. Here, carefully reconstructed
rooms, early consumer goods, and evolving architectural details reveal how Osaka transformed from a merchant city into a
modern metropolis. Visitors can move between decade-specific living rooms, explore a recreated 1960s kitchen, examine
pre-war maps, and see how Osaka households adapted to rapid modernization.

Then comes the museum’s newest layer: “Osaka Momoyo,” a 360° XR (cross-reality) encounter that takes you through 12 moments
of Osaka history, from the Edo era to Reiwa. Seated inside a dedicated XR theatre, visitors wear VR headsets to witness
Osaka’s transformation from a bustling canal-filled merchant hub to a global modern city. The entire experience unfolds from
a single fixed point—Sakaisuji/Hiranomachi Corner—allowing viewers to watch the city rise, fall, rebuild, and evolve across
four centuries. It is cinematic, spatial, and surprisingly emotional.

The contrast between the physical Edo townscape and the high-tech XR journey makes this museum a rare hybrid: part
time-travel film, part walkthrough historical set, part design and culture archive. For travelers seeking something more
