Mochitsuki in Minamisemba
The Minamisemba neighborhood invites residents and visitors to join a warm, community-run mochi-tsuki (rice-cake pounding) event — one of the most welcoming ways to experience authentic Japanese year-end traditions.
One of the strengths of OSAKA SCENE being built by people who actually call this city home is our ability to surface the hyper-local traditions that rarely make it into guidebooks. These small, quietly meaningful gatherings open the door for both residents and international visitors to slip into the rhythm of everyday Japan — to experience simple yet heartfelt customs that you won’t find on commercial itineraries.
The Minamisemba Mochi-tsuki is exactly that kind of discovery: a hands-on, community-driven celebration that offers a genuine taste of year-end tradition, far from the bright lights and holiday promotions of central Osaka.
Organized by the Atsumi District Community Activities Council, the gathering welcomes residents, families, and newcomers to pound hot steamed rice, shape fresh mochi by hand, and enjoy a variety of traditional flavors prepared by local volunteers.
The event is held on December 7th, 2025, begins at 11:00 and continues even in light rain, reflecting its grassroots community spirit. Participants can join in the cooperative mochi-making process, learn about the tradition from neighborhood members, and experience a relaxed
cross-cultural atmosphere. The setting at Ashii-ike Ground, near Minamisemba Kaikan, provides an intimate backdrop typical
of Japan’s small neighborhood gatherings.
For travelers or new residents wanting to meet locals, contribute to a communal activity, and enjoy a welcoming introduction
to Japanese end-of-year customs, this mochi-tsuki event offers an authentic and memorable experience just steps from
Shinsaibashi and Nagahoribashi.
