Bunraku New Year Performances
January is peak season for Bunraku in Osaka. At the National Bunraku Theatre, master puppeteers, musicians, and narrators bring centuries-old stories to life in a month-long program that offers one of the city’s most immersive cultural experiences for residents, foreign residents, and inbound visitors alike.

Bunraku was born in Osaka over 300 years ago, emerging from the city’s merchant culture and thriving entertainment districts during the Edo period. While Bunraku is now recognized worldwide as an intangible cultural heritage, Osaka remains its true home—both historically and artistically.
The National Bunraku Theatre stands as a rare institution: Japan’s only theater devoted entirely to Bunraku. Unlike touring productions or occasional performances elsewhere, this venue supports long-running programs that allow audiences to experience Bunraku in its intended depth and rhythm.
Each performance combines three visible puppeteers per character, live shamisen accompaniment, and a single tayū (narrator) who delivers all dialogue and narration. Stories explore themes of loyalty, sacrifice, love, and fate, conveyed through precise movement, musical phrasing, and dramatic pacing that remains compelling even for audiences without Japanese language ability.
For January 2026, the Bunraku program runs from January 3 through January 27, with no performances on January 9 and January 19. Performances are divided into multiple parts across the day, allowing visitors to attend a full program or select individual acts depending on time and interest.
Selected performances offer English commentary via an earphone guide, as noted on the official schedule. This optional support helps contextualize the story and characters while preserving the immersive atmosphere of the theater. Combined with flexible ticketing options, January Bunraku is one of the most approachable ways for foreign residents and inbound visitors to engage deeply with Osaka’s cultural heritage.
